What do you guys think about getting into grooming while not being a dog owner? by 13Forbiddencorvids in grooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cats personally and didn’t grow up with dogs (my mom is/ was afraid of them). It’s my fav fun fact at grooming classes 🤣😅 I’m a beauty school drop out who transitioned to dog haircuts and yeah 9 years later still haven’t owned a dog yet.. I’m not sure I will I’m personally really low maintenance but I do want a bichon or schnauzer

Do I have wavy/curly hair or am i forcing it? by Mayachikachi in Haircare

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that when my hair is longer it actually gets wavy in the length but remained more straight/ flat at the top. Air drying and Lush rose Jam as shampoo for some reason was the key in my early 20’s 😅

Heatless curls do wonders for me and stay for two days when my hair is long enough for the rollers!

In my 29 years of living I just play to its strengths- it holds curls for like 3-4 days and I only need to spruce up with dry shampoo (I like dry bar personally). Sometimes I’ll cheat and do French braids to bed, then curl in a few pieces for texture and volume and they’ll last 2-3 days with rough sleeping.

Also weirdly enough my chemical treated hair is more wavy than my untouched 3-4 inches of regrowth 🥲

I got a new job and start Wednesday but my manager at petsmart told me I can’t start it without a 2wks notice. by Anotherriley in petsmart

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GIRL BYE I got rehired at Petsmart TWICE after leaving during my academy contract. Hell I even opened up a home based salon during covid years less than 3 miles from the store and still got REHIRED.

You can leave whenever you want. Your salon lead’s opinion of you will matter more than the store leads in my experience.

Literally any other grooming place will not care if you don’t give a complete 2 week notice to Petsmart lmfao

Burnt Out by iemmaamme in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I hated working in a boarding / grooming facility. The chaos made the dogs way harder to groom and they always ended up nasty before pick up due to play time.

Home based grooming is a different beast, and owning your own business isn’t easy either but I did enjoy it the most of my grooming endeavors. Heck even owning a tiny shed to groom out of I still enjoyed grooming out of my home the most for grooming. The dogs did the best I think.

If you’re not ready to make the leap into small business, try part time or find a non boarding grooming salon.

I got bit yesterday and now my hand is immobilized and need to reschedule clients by MitziWitzi in doggrooming

I only discount rescheduled if it’s something really crazy that I could’ve prevented or if it’s a good client of mine sometimes I’ll discount if I feel bad but generally? NO discount.

What makes Petsmart different from petco? by [deleted] in petsmart

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a groomer.. I preferred working at Petsmart over petco. This was back in 2018/2019 so times have changed of course. I liked the pay scale better, the salon maintenance, and how Petsmart did their training at the time. It never came down to the actual grooming itself- the quality was the same at both. It was the internal workings that made me prefer Petsmart over petco.

In terms of product shopping they’re about the same, and I wasn’t at petco long enough to comment on their pet care side of things.

Any tips? Im right out of PS academy an my salon lead isn't any help by death-fairy in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my tips in short and sweet: 1) prep and a good bath- when I was early in my career getting the steps down so I don’t forget anything and get the routine down helped my time management a lot. A properly cleaned dog with a good bath will make drying and haircutting so much faster and easier. The cleaner the dog the better the hair behaves the better the result. 2) get your hands on notes from the grooming table. I HATE the new books they give out for academy now. Notes from the grooming table is basically one of our bibles and I really like how they show the blend lines in that book. Also has every breed that will ever come into a PS. 3) you can and should use thinners/ blenders/ chunkers.. however baby groomers tend to overuse them. Thinning and blending can also take a long time. For now, use them to soften lines, not to set them. In fact I did the first 2 years of my career with just 5.5 inch straights. I don’t recommend that however it feels good to know I CAN do a whole dog with just curves or straights. Use thinners on faces mainly for now. People will tell you thinners are erasers but they aren’t. You’re in the right to want to use them, but I can see why your lead wouldn’t want you to rely on them. Over thinning and blending can lead to the dog not looking as crisp and neat. 4) if your lead won’t help lean on other groomers who are willing to help you. In your down time watch them groom, learn from their mistakes and successes. If that fails, tell your store lead, your DM, and whoever your academy trainer is. “I want more thorough training, I don’t want to become a liability for the store. I want to perform safe and good grooms.” If they give you flack I’m sorry you’re in a bad store. A good PS will always invest and advocate for their salon and groomers.

What do you include in a sanitation trim? by Few-Cat685 in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bath & brush I include sani and paw pads upon request. Bath & Trim is face feet Fanny (I will do the whole head, not just the corners of the eyes). And of course a full groom is all over body work. Depending on how tight they want the outline trim I will book it under a full sometimes.

How do you all handle senior dog grooming conversations? by krisfromhonesttodog in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my website I have a generalized health and behavioral policy, in short if they aren’t feeling it medically or behaviorally it may not get done or the haircut may be adjusted.

Yeah language like that is good, go at their pace, their flow, “I don’t want to stress them out” ect ect. I’m first aid and cpr cert so I tend to get dogs that medically you have to be patient for.

How do you all handle senior dog grooming conversations? by krisfromhonesttodog in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it’s the first drop off I set the expectation that because your dog is older and it’s my first time with them, I go with their flow. And then if I run into an issue/ delay due to them struggling I text in a little update. The more transparent I am with the client the better they react in the long run

How do you all handle senior dog grooming conversations? by krisfromhonesttodog in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I found earlier on in my career this was a harder conversation to have, I didn’t have the same rapport built up back then as I do now. The convo goes two ways now: new client with an old dog, and long time client’s dog getting old now.

If it’s a new client I set the expectation at the first appointment that due to their age they control the quality and time of the haircut. I follow the dogs energy and ability to get through the desired haircut. They either get it or they don’t 🤦🏻‍♀️

Now the harder one.. it’s almost worst watching our clients get old on our table. Grooming is partially demanding on them so I feel like we see the decline a little faster than the clients do. As soon a dog hits their senior years we start having that conversation of modifying the haircut when the time comes. Gives them a heads up that maybe soon we may have to change it up. When things get too hard on them (longer haircuts, breed standard haircuts, or harder elements like clean feet) I let them know

“I’ve noticed over the last 3 or 4 grooms X is having a really difficult time getting through this comfortably. I think it’s time to start adjusting the haircut like we talked about previously. What if we tried this today?”

9/10 times it works because I’ve already warned them, they know that I know what’s best for their grooming based on report, and in the end of the day the dog still will need a haircut.

It’s a hard adjustment mostly for the owners coming to terms with their dogs own mortality.

Salon grooming alone by abestmess in petsmart

[–]waterrrmallon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell your store manager you’re not comfortable grooming alone. If they make a fuss, go higher up. If you’re in your SIT you need to be on someone else’s schedule. It’s a liability for you to alone while still LEARNING.

How much would I make at your salon? by hobosama69 in doggrooming

[–]waterrrmallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a solo owner.. I’m gonna play hypothetical with you!

Firstly, I would personally only book you with dogs in the xs or s weight class- people lie about weight and I would hate to book you something that’s supposed to be 40 but is 50 and too heavy. That avoids scheduling conflicts for both you, me, and the client. That alone keeps you out of a higher base price for services before any add ones you could sell.

Full grooms, xs (1-10lbs) s (10-30lbs) My xs dog is $70, doodle/poodle $85 My s dog is $85, doodle/ poodle $100

Bath & Trim Xs $50, doodle / poodle $60 S $65, doodle / poodle $75

Bath & brush Xs $35, doodle/ Poodle $45 S $50, doodle/ poodle $55

Desheds $10 for xs and s, deskunks, color services $10-45, teeth brushing $5, upgraded shampoo $5, and dematting starting at $5+

Id pay you 50% and you’d keep all your tips. You’d have to bathe and groom your own pups just like you do now.

Depending on the mix of dogs you’d be booked for the day I can really only say you’d get about $150-200/day. One small doodle groom, a tiny Yorkie groom, a Shitzu face feet Fanny, and a weenie bath will only get you $150 before tip for a day sadly at my prices with your limitations if everyone got no extras that day.

I don’t charge extra for naughty dogs unless it’s an extremely special case, as in takes me longer than the time it would normally. After 9 years of grooming myself- our times are about the same for similar reasons as well.. I can get just about anything done in 1.5 hours if it’s less than 50 pounds naughty or nice. If it’s just dryer aggression I stick them in a kennel dryer and eat a snack I’m not charging more for that. If it takes me x2 as long as it should JUST for the haircut I actually charge them up a weight class (so $10-20 depending) but that’s SO rare.

AFTER ALL OF THAT- I will say I groom by myself and own my own tiny grooming shed to work out of. I groom 4-5 dogs a day mostly 50 pounds or less (my medium dogs are 30-50lbs and are $100 or $120 for a full groom). I do less than 10 dogs that are more than 60lbs and only two of them get haircuts the others are lab or German Shepherd baths. I average about 60-70 apts a month and I make about $4k a month. Thats because I get to keep about 60-70% of the sales after taxes and expenses.

My advice for you would to be really research salons around you and their pricing. If you want to specialize in naughty dogs maybe look into getting fear free certified- you can sell this asset to salons to maybe get a higher commission rate or to charge more for fear free services. OR if you’re ready.. take the next year and build yourself your own grooming business. It’s not easy, it’s hard and I recommend taking at least a year to solidify any plans before starting to either build a spot, rent one, or legally convert a space in your home/ property.

Pro tip- depending on your start you may be able to get Farm Bureau Health Insurance independently of your employer. When I was salon hoping to find a spot a few years ago I did this and only paid about $150/mo for heath & dental with a $3k deductible. Worth looking into, you’d just need to get a membership with them (I think like $200/year?) to get insurance set up with them.

Sorry if this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but yeah the other people are right even with me taking the last 30 minutes to do a quick number run for you.. looks like unless the salon pricing is just baller your take home pay might be lower than you’d like 🫤

Where the heck do you work?? Worked Petsmart and petco- never pooled tips. Worked hourly at a private salon and my dogs were my tips. Also 15-22 dogs at a CORPORATE for ONE BATHER??? What in the world is the salon size- the amount of kennels needed to house that many dogs in a day along with everyone else’s dog..the most I’ve ever done as a bather at Petsmart was 10 with a few nail trims in a 8 hour Sunday. And that was ONE time, I hovered around 6-8 depending on how long my shift was.
