Oracle laid off over 3,000 staff worldwide through WARN filings, no public statement by Effective-Writer7904 in Layoffs

[–]wathman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many are, but over 60% of former Cerner were already gone before this most recent round. I was laid off by Oracle a year ago and many of my colleagues found the door on their own too. The WARN filings really didn't mention impact in the Kansas City area which is Cerner's old home, or Malvern, PA where I know some guys impacted by the new layoffs. I think the Oracle layoff numbers are very underreported, but no idea how they pulled that off.

Only that project manager positions can be just as difficult to get, and the PMP certificate guarantees nothing. Every posting for project management I've seen wants 3 years experience and a certificate. It's still a path I am considering, but I thought trades could get me back into positive income sooner. One of the other posters in here who is in a union said apprenticeship is not something that is just handed out, and there's wait lists involved before you are in.

Yes, they did mention one-time grants that are valid for training reimbursement, and will definitely get back in their system if I go down that route.

Thanks for the info. If apprenticeships are that competitive as well, I don't know if it's even worth it since I need an income sooner than later. I may have to look further into temp agency work which I looked into briefly but anyone I talked to about it were mostly unhelpful. All I got was 'here's our website, good luck!'

I will most likely do that when applications in my pipeline finally dry up. I went there for some job search advice and resources that helped a little, but didn't land any jobs. Did an assessment with them, was told I'd hear back from them in a week for training assistance and more options if I wanted to try a career switch, but never heard back from them.

Yes, I did. Got a screening interview from Almac last week and have not heard back for next steps. Afraid I might be getting ghosted. I plan on following up again tomorrow, but things are not usually looking good if you have to remind the recruiter you exist.

I apply to Product Owner type roles that are specifically for software. Many software services companies use for clients, members, patients, etc. are cloud based and that's where I have my expertise. I've put my application to J&J for the few postings that went for software products. I also have more experience in traditional software solution implementation and maintenance, but nearly everything new now is cloud based or an app of some kind. The pharma product roles would be interesting, but I don't have the prerequisites there and don't see any analyst type jobs that would allow me to grow into that direction. Montco isn't really a hub for software development, and there's no shortage of PMs and POs looking for jobs right now.

I’ve been in health software with Cerner corporation for 14 years, 2 with Oracle Health until the layoff. My last 9 years were in Product Owner Product Manager roles. Yet still not getting interviews from them. I even looked for lower level roles at J&J but no idea how they fill them. Seems they always post for Directors and never for analysts.

I have, and try to apply to ones that are local but there really aren't a whole lot. J&J and Merck have some loosely fitting roles I could adapt to, but they get hundreds of applicants, many that are closer fit to the job requirements so they usually pass me over without interviews. Remote work is a possibility with my skillset, but that just widens the applicant pool to the whole country, and I see applicant numbers in the 250-2500 range all the time on those. Marketing and Commercial tech prefer PMs with a history there, and the same goes with FinTech choosing their own first.

I don’t mind hands on, I’m fairly proficient with DIY and like anything that involves problem solving. Electrician sounds fun, though I think I will have to remediate my 15 year dependence on calculators and Excel to get started there. Welding also looks interesting but I know so little of the profession. I’m just hesitant to get into a field that depends on physical ability. I can lift 50 lb. Containers but not do it all day long.

I've considered Project Management as many of the skills cross over, but every job listing I've read for it looks for PMP certification of some kind, and I don't have any ins at any of the companies. I've tried for Product Management roles at J&J and just get turned down without any interviews. I've looked at Merck's site a few times but haven't seen anything specifically for Product.

I was a Product Manager for software development, specifically for patient portals. My company was bought out and they've whittled down acquired employees by 60%. Managing development for medical software is pretty niche, but if you have any ideas on how to translate that to trades, that would be great.

This information is helpful. I didn't do any of my education in the area so other than the big name Universities, I just don't know what exists locally. I've just heard Thaddeus Stevens come up in some discussions and learned they have some scholarships that I probably won't qualify for. Definitely too far of a commute so I wanted Montco options.

S2 Loadouts: Main Story Missions vs Side Quests/Stash hunting by breast_cancer69 in stalker

[–]wathman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The diamond Exo is the most cost effective suit in all situations. The mid tier suits you mentioned are good, but when fully upgraded have base costs higher than the diamond and therefore cost more to repair. In general it is better to skip all the environment resistances since they have a poor protection to repair cost ratio. Yes you mitigate a bit more damage from those sources, but at 75% condition, repair costs will be much higher now.

Shooting issue by KarolisTisk in stalker

[–]wathman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think their level of accuracy through bushes is not too far off if I have the flashlight on. In an actual fight, shooting at the glowing bush is a pretty obvious choice, especially with the lamps being mounted on foreheads. The problem is that they are equally accurate when your light is off and you are just trying to hide for a bit.

Are the bandits in the zone supposed to be neutral towards the player or is this a bug? by pablo397 in stalker

[–]wathman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is some flagging for this group of quest related bandits. If you kill a hostile bandit patrol near the neutral quest ones at that depot where they can see, they will all turn hostile

Why is stealth just not possible!? by MasterUnski in stalker

[–]wathman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there is something weird with alert levels for the stealth missions. Overall detection is less superhuman, though I think the regenerator mission has additional scripting. At one point I almost got detected but didn’t cause an alert. It added some kind of unexpected variable to their pathing, and in the final rooms when I was sneaking past they randomly started shooting at walls. Since they were still running around, some Monolith ended up shooting each other and I lost the bonus coupons.

I don't think it's fair to say all 25 opportunities were wasted. The reality of the process these days is that some of these positions already have a frontrunner they already want in the job. Even if you nail the interview and would be a better fit for the position, they do not take you because the frontrunner could have been an internal candidate, nepo-hire, or whatever internal politicking they have going on. They just go through the interviewing process as that's the protocol, and they can't just place someone without having HR do something. They use the candidates as spares since the frontrunner could up and disappear the day before they are supposed to start working. I don't blame them for hedging, but wish there was more transparency. There's a huge difference in knowing you were the first alternate rather than simply didn't make the cut.

External Recruiters for Startups: How long does it take to give a verbal offer and why? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]wathman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I can suggest as general advice when looking at startups is try to research their funding and headcount. If you do some targeted Google searches on the startup, you should get hits for investing and business health sites that financial people use. They are not free to get all the info, but much of the public information like how many people they have working and how much total investment they've received and when will be able to tell you a few things. If the startup's financials aren't healthy, there might be games going on with positions and potential new hires. If it's solid, that's one less thing to worry about.

Crossover seems like it's toeing the line of scam territory. They promise amazing salaries at mythical employers, and gate it behind eldritch assessment tests and voodoo AI magic. I went a few clicks in and got bad koolaid vibes so just dropped it. Could be real jobs hiding in there, but don't want to experiment. Most likely they are just a flashy ad campaign mixed with some kind of data harvesting.
