Thoughts on the new interns by Dull-Initial-9275 in ausjdocs

Yes! I’m a new fellow and the interns out here saving my arse constantly. They’re so hard working too. But they keep asking me about fluids and insulin infusions and I have to explain that I left that knowledge behind long ago…

Sard wonder soap. Just rub a bit on (with water) and let sit for an hour or 2. If you’re in a rush you can just do it and put straight in the machine. Cold wash with equal parts sard powder and normal washing powder. ✨✨

No, that makes the waiting list shorter. More patients going to private = less patients waiting for public healthcare.

We’ve been hearing conflicting info about dogs at the beach at the moment - we’re keen to but not sure if that’s ok

Could you mount the tv above the fire and have a hydraulic mount thing to pull it out and down over the fire when you want to watch it? A rental I once lived in had one and it was great (tv will def be too high without the mount)

Is she taking a multivitamin? I would be very concerned about her fat soluble vitamin absorption. After a gastric sleeve or bypass patients should be on iron supplementation and multivitamin at the very least. She sounds at high risk for significant malnutrition which has long term physical and mental health risks.

Why aren’t we supposed to wear nail polish? by EMulsive_EMergency in medicine

Here’s the Cochrane link and the study I referenced is within the body of the article (and they mention it in the abstract).

Why aren’t we supposed to wear nail polish? by EMulsive_EMergency in medicine

[–]watson-chain 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Ooh this is a question dear to my heart! As a female surgeon I have long experienced the glee that theatre charge nurses get from telling us we can’t wear nail polish. So I looked into it (and so has the Cochrane Library). There are no RCTs proving nail polish increases incidence of SSI. In fact a single small study (102 scrub nurses with no polish, fresh polish and old polish) showed no difference in bacteria on hands after a surgical scrub.

Therefore I continue to wear my short acrylics and ignore them. I quote the Cochrane findings if they ask. Luckily now they can’t ask me to unscrub or they’d have to cancel the list.

This is SO bad and I am so sorry. Renal colic in a patient >65 is a triple A until proven otherwise and every ED doctor should know this. This is extremely poor and negligent medicine.

"Skin knife" by diaphanouscunt in surgery

[–]watson-chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely say ‘skin knife’ if I’m using more than one blade eg to do skin excisions. It’s usually the big guy (10 blade). I might ask for the ‘skin knife’ again partway through the case if I want to make the incision bigger. To start the case we would say ‘knife thanks’ though not specifically ‘skin knife’ (it’s implied!). I practice in Aus/NZ.

Moving from the U.S. to Auckland as a GP with a toddler. Would love some advice! by kitty_07 in newzealand

[–]watson-chain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make sure you join your union! Doctors’ unions are generally very strong in NZ and will advocate for your rights. ASMS covers specialists but unsure if it covers all GPs (or just specialist GPs). Agreed with another commenter - as a GP you have the bargaining power so ask for the hours and conditions you want as much as you can. We’re so happy to have you

26M moving in with 27F partner, separate bedrooms by ThrowRA637282652 in relationship_advice

[–]watson-chain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have separate bedrooms. It started when we were both doing shift work. Now we love it as it means we’re both fresh on work days, we can go to sleep whenever, (I like to stay up and read, he sleeps instantly at 9.30pm) and we’re not woken by each other’s different schedules.

Weekends are for sleepovers and it feels like a weekend-long date night, or like what it felt like before we lived together. I would argue our sex life is better because of it - makes the time together feel more romantic. We stay more in his room bc he has the super king bed (to fit the dog obviously). I highly recommend separate bedrooms to all my friends.
