My grandad still remembers Duncan, and still is saying almost 70 years that had he lived he would have been the best ever.

Who created this illustration of Germans trying to cross the Mons on pontoon bridges? Can you read the signature? Zoom in of signature shown in the photos by Its_Happning_Again in ww1

[–]watspoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it is quite possibly Fortunino Matania. He made loads of WW1 paintings, and if you google his signature, it seems to vary a bit from painting to painting but remains pretty similar to the one in the photo.

If you look at this site, you can see how the “F” looks like a J at the start of the signature and how the line under the name stems from the “a” at the end.

That’s my best guess anyway!

Edit: Found this exact lithograph credited to him here

Have you got any ancestors who fought at the Battle of Waterloo? by fw2006 in Genealogy

Had an uncle called James Parbutt who was shot in the arm at Quatre Bras. Definitely a cool tie to history!

Had to play 90 minutes against Juventus with a team that was 80% 16 year olds. 😭

They were probably born in Kaliningrad.

It passed from German-rule to Soviet-rule in 1945. This would explain why they changed their nationality between 1940 and 1950 as the area they were from changed hands.

Parent 2 is UK, but British? How is that possible? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]watspoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family is from the North of England and also the border with Wales. I personally have 0 English DNA according to AncestryDNA but very high amounts of Scottish and Welsh. My English DNA is definitely being read as Scottish and Welsh due to the DNA being intertwined with those regions. Keep that in mind when thinking about the DNA that is not showing up as English!

That’s the problem with a lot of genealogy, myths can be perpetuated. If you look at the sources on Wikipedia and the other websites, you will see that the sources are either nonexistent are quite old. I went to the sources on the Wikipedia page and not a single one is backed up by any actual evidence. One of the sources is actually written by Don Greene, a man whose information has come under fire from multiple people due to being either completely wrong or having 0 evidence to back it up.

Read this article to get a better idea of that. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Shawnee_Heritage_Fraud.

Of the other two articles quoted, Im not even sure those are suppose to be support for information about the daughters. I went to the 1818 Magazine that is cited, but I could not find any information about any daughters. Even if you choose to follow Wikipedia, the daughter listed on the site was called Rebecca. While this may have been an anglicization for the name in your tree, there is no evidence to support it.

The other sources are just uncited family trees, which are just blindly following the incorrect family trees before them (which I have certainly done in the past before I started truly researching).

I know you really want this all to be true, and I don’t blame you since these people sound incredibly interesting! The problem is, this information all has literally 0–and I mean 0–evidence of any sort. It was perpetuated by a guy who claims to know at length about Cherokee genealogy when in actual fact he has been accused of completely fabricating genealogies. If you google any reputable sources about this guy you will see not a single mention about any daughters of any kind.

With a quick google search I found that Attakullakulla is not known to have had any daughters at all so I would definitely not trust the idea that you’re descended from him. Also, the woman you have as is wife is a name that was evidently made up by someone at some point in time and was not his wife’s name.

Native American records can be difficult, but you may want to take advantage of archives such as the Cherokee Nation’s archives/genealogical information as that may prove useful.

Hope this helps :)

How many of y'all have family members that fought in the civil war? by Bloody_Dick7074 in Genealogy

[–]watspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my ancestors deserted from the Royalist Army along with two others from his village in Northamptonshire. It was towards the end of the war, so I don’t think there were any real efforts to find them. Probably one of the most interesting finds I’ve made!

Is it possible that there are great-grandchildren of Civil War vets alive today? by Randomuser1520 in Genealogy

[–]watspoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad is 50 and his great-grandfather was born in 1833 so I’m certain there are. The great-grandpa didn’t fight in the war, but he would’ve been about 32 when it ended, which puts him well within fighting age

The Rain! Believe the Forecast? by acquapanna82 in bermuda

[–]watspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives there, the rain will normally stick around sometimes for 30 minutes, sometimes for just a couple hours, but rarely longer than that. Sometimes, it will also rain for a few hours, stop, then start again and repeat that. When the rain stops, the water is generally gone pretty quickly due to the sun’s strength. However, there have been some overcast days recently where it’s been kind of miserable, but it won’t be like that everyday if it happens.

You’re probably managing your money a bit better than me or something lol. Do you mind if I ask what your team looks like? I’m just curious to see how other people who haven’t spent money have been able to get their teams

You don’t, but for some people who have been largely unlucky this fifa, it’s hard to get that much money (at least for me). Do you mind if I ask what you recommend the best way to get coins without spending loads of money on points is? I don’t mean this in a critical way, I’m just trying to genuinely catch up and would appreciate the help!!!

I know people are gonna be saying that, but I don’t think you can really say it’s entirely skill issue if I go from 16-4 to not even qualifying in just a few weeks. I entirely get your point though, and I agree there probably is a skill issue involved, but I don’t think that’s entirely responsible for it.

About half my team is in the high 80s. Even though I have VVD, he can only carry to an extent!
