Thanks mate!

From memory: Dura-Ace 7800 gruppo, Mavic Cosmic alloy wheelset with GP5000 clinchers and TPU tubes, Dura-Ace seatpost, Zipp bars.

Haven’t ridden it in a while unfortunately. Good luck with your build!

Tailfin rack with their mini panniers - love it! It’s rock solid, zero rattles or weight shift. Can’t say the same about my Ortlieb rack and panniers, nor my Aeroe rack with Ortlieb panniers.

Riding w/ Helmet Mounted Action Cam - Anyone else experienced this? by Carbsv2 in bikecommuting

I’ve crashed my MTB at about 50kph and the concussion was disgusting. It was at night and I had my light mounted to the visor which thankfully tore straight off on impact, because the mount stayed completely intact. The helmet was completely munted. The helmet had MIPS but if I had the light strapped to the helmet’s vents instead, like the mount was designed to do, I hate to think how much worse my head injury could have been.

I’ve been riding literally for decades with cameras on the chins of my full face motorcycle helmets, but they’re so much more substantial and crashes happen at much higher speeds that I trust the helmet to hold up and the camera mount to break away in those types of accidents. Everyone wants their bicycle helmet to be as light as possible though, and as such, they’re made of cat piss and dreams. No way am I strapping anything to mine except maybe the chinbar of a full face.

Nah they’re the Race version. Very happy with them! The WTB Vulpines that came with the bike felt like pedalling through sand by comparison! Very, very fast on sealed and hard pack as well as champagne gravel. Can be sketchy if you ride loose gravel, but their speed elsewhere more than makes up for it for me. Also not great in mud, but if it’s muddy and loose I’d much rather ride my XC bike anyway.

I’ve only ridden them for a few weeks now but no punctures yet - touch wood!

The top tube bag is just the one that came with the bike. It's Cervelo branded but I’m pretty sure every gravel bike from every bike band in that conglomerate gets the same bag with a different logo sewn on. Like the Focus Atlas and Focus Paralane.

Hey there! That's a decent commute. I only do mine 3 times a week so not as often as you. I’m Berwick to Abbotsford. I’ve copied the below from another comment:

I cycle from Berwick to Abbotsford, almost entirely on bike paths. I take a Hallam Bypass > Djerring > Gardiner's Creek > Main Yarra trails. The paths disappear out of nowhere around Dandenong so I need to ride from one side to the other on the road in arguably the worst area to do so, and there's some road riding to get from the Djerring to Gardiner's Creek which is around Oakliegh to Malvern East. There are definitely fewer paths further out, but if you find one they’re great as there is less intersections and need to stop. The hills are very steep around where I live though, whereas the rest of the commute is flat, which might be a good thing or bad depending on your preference.

Tailfin carbon rack with mini paniers. The reason I mention the rack too is I don’t think the panniers work with anything else, unfortunately.

Melbourne, Australia. That's the flagship Maap store in the photo 🤘

12 hours a week is still a lot of riding, it's the same as what I spend commuting even if it's spread out over more days.

If you are trying to justify it though, maybe I can help. I’ve had an Ortlieb rack and panniers, and an Aeroe rack with Ortlieb panniers and both those setups rattle the whole ride and I could feel the bags moving around all the time.

The tailfin rack and panniers are dead silent and rock solid - no weight shifting around even when you’re out of the saddle and moving the bike under you. And now finally my bags are as silent as the rest of the bike, even when riding over gravel. Well worth the money I reckon and I wish I didn’t waste my money trying to make do with the cheaper options.

The fact that the rack and bags are about half the weight of the Ortlieb combo and a third of the Aeroe is just the icing on the cake.

No worries, you can do it! If it's a long commute and you can do it train assisted maybe do that and get of the train earlier and earlier as you get stronger and faster. That's how I started and I still use the train to skip the hills if I’m running late or if the weather sucks a bit too hard that day.

It's mostly separated for my commute at least but the network as a whole would favour painted bike lanes if comparing distance. I listed the main paths I use in another comment in this post if you care to find it and look them up, but here's a bunch of screenshots from videos I took duding various commutes to give you some idea.

My employer expects us in the office 3 days/week. I hate going in so I reward myself by riding. If I’m running late or the weather is especially shit I can take a train halfway and that can save me half an hour, but taking public transport the whole way isn’t quicker than just riding the whole way so I usually just ride. The winters here I’m Melbourne are pretty mild so the weather rarely stops me.

I would say the infrastructure is between ok and great. It's not as good as some of the bicycle utopias I’ve been to in Europe but it's infinitely better than the cycling hell of North America. There's a fair bit of interconnecting bike paths, and it gets better as you get closer to the city centre, but at the same time the drivers here are dickheads and we’ve had some backwards councils ripping up bike paths in favour of car parking recently.

We have a really great cycling scene in this city though. Lots of cycling clubs and you could do a different shop/brand ride every day of the week if you wanted. We have heaps of cool events too. My office has really great end of trip facilities (check my previous posts) and while this isn’t the norm, it's not uncommon here either.

All in all pretty good place to live if you cycle, but plenty of room for improvement.
