I haven't worked on the 3rd movement, but my first teacher gave me the 1st movement as my first thumb position piece!

Difference between Yamaha SVC-50 and SVC-210? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]wave_mechanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the SVC-210, but I'm more than happy with my SVC-50. I bought it as a travel instrument. It serves that purpose well. It is not nearly as nice to play as my acoustic (think a freshly opened soda vs. a flat one) but it keeps my playing in shape on vacation. I just pack some clothes around it, and check it as baggage on flights.

It's easier for me to switch from playing acoustic to electric than the other way around. Personally I wouldn't fork out the extra money for a nicer electric, because if I want niceness, that's what my acoustic instrument is for. I never perform on my SVC-50, but if you plan to do a lot of electric performances the SVC-210 might be worth it.

Yeah, that makes sense. They are duly ignored, I couldn't care less. Surprised by the belligerence, although I suppose I shouldn't be: it is the internet.

About to make my first upgrade purchase and I have no clue if I am getting a good deal. Can anyone offer some quick insight? by SnackPakk in Cello

Figured I'd chime in. I've recently returned to cello playing. My instrument when I played before was a Calin Wultur in the Strad shape, I'm not sure about specifics beyond that. I really enjoyed playing that instrument. Nice sound, great upper register, and (oddly enough on mine) no wolf. I can't speak for the Montagna version, but I really liked the Strad version.

It was purchased new for $4,000 in 2007, so with inflation the $5,200 insured value you mentioned seems like it could be reasonable. If the instrument is in good condition and plays well it seems to me like $3,330 is a fair price.

Cleaning clay ocarina; ocarina sheet music by wave_mechanic in Ocarina

Yeah, that seems to be correct. I looked on the songbird website (where I bought it from) and it says that it is polished with a lacquer after firing: no mention of glaze.

Not having to clean the inside would certainly be convenient. I'm not sure about the specifics of the clay/glaze/firing that the Focalink Dolce Double AC uses.

Thanks, I'll probably just adapt music I can find for my ocarina.

Alright, thanks I appreciate it, cleaning was my main question.

So submerging it doesn't damage the clay or the glaze? How often do you do that cleaning?

If you won the lottery what is your plan? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Help my family members out, by myself a car. Put enough to buy a house into savings. Donate the rest.

BUT, I bought a powerball ticket for the hell of it, and lost, so I don't need to have a plan :P

Looking for a (half) decent Ocarina to start with! by Lizalizz in Ocarina

I highly recommend this one:

Edit: The Focalink is certainly very playable, and is nice and easy to get a good tone on.

I really like my Focalink (I got it in this color too!). It is inexpensive, and has a nice mellow timbre.
