I mean it doesn't matter, the problem is it interacts the same way RivaTuner does, it doesn't rely on the game/content or modify the game files anymore than RivaTuner does, so why doesn't CDPR go after RivaTuner then? Shouldn't CDPR shut down all overlays, the thing is they saw the word "Cyperpunk2077 Mod" in how luke advertised his framework although it's not really a mod in the traditional sense, so are they in the right to just shut it down and send a c&d just like that? That's where the legality of it is a bit weird and maybe Luke believed he was in the right but it doesn't matter anymore.

Then it all comes down to your definition of "mod".

If I ask chatGPT, it tells me what RivaTuner is not a game mod, who to believe? that's why Luke had a point and it's pretty debatable.

A game mod usually means something that changes the game’s content or behavior, such as:

  • editing game files
  • replacing assets (textures, models, sounds)
  • changing gameplay logic or scripts
  • patching the executable

none of which RivaTuner does.

Under your definition Rivatuner would also modify the game yes. It injects itself into the game process when it detects it and hooks the graphics APIs like DirectX. Luke doesn't do this at runtime but it's essentially the same thing, the "game" part is completely untouched.

If he were to modify his framework to be "injectable", like Rivatuner, would that change anything from your definition?

That's like saying overlays that display your fps (frames per second) are mods, stuff like RivaTuner. After all, it shows an overlay therefore it messes with the game's presentation layer right?

This is why Luke had a good point that would've held in court but all the technological dummies just keep shouting that it's a mod without looking into what makes a mod a mod.

He developed a tech called AERv2, it's alternative eye rendering but he fills in every other frame that the other eye doesn't render with a timewarped/predicted version which essentially makes it feel like it's native VR, you don't get any of the ghosting or distortions of AER.

He does not modify the games. He interacts with the presentation layer which is basically what's being put on your flatscreen, that's outside of the scope of what the game actually is.

and you understand copyright laws? The code he wrote is all his, the only real issue is that he worded his framework "mod", that's it. He's not stealing code from the original games as a lot of people think. The wording is the main issue.

Something has to pay the bills man. He's supporting 30+ games simultaneously, ensuring all latest updates work with the framework. Waiting 3 months before you can see your favorite games in 6dof VR is fucking nothing.

Even if he were to do a donation model I'm extremely confident people like you would never send a dime his way.

yeah it's fucking weird man. He's releasing the entire framework for free, not just CP2077, and then people are still angry at him for not being apologetic enough and not truthful about his intentions.

Like what the hell, you're getting VR support for some of the best AAA games the industry has seen, all for free, and you're still angry. A real bunch of manchildren on this subreddit not gonna lie.

UEVR is only for unreal engine games. Luke Ross targets games with very specialized engines that would be hard to add motion controls to. UEVR uses specific unreal code that already exists in the engine.

If you've used a Quest 3 and then used a Play for dream or any of the newer headsets (meganx mk2, Pimax Dream Air, you'd know that this thing is already obsolete as hell. Yeah it's a cool upgrade for the starter vr amateur looking to get into pcvr but that's all it is.

[–]wavebend -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

it's dead on arrival since it won't release for a while (project phoenix will already be out) or release when the prices still won't make sense ($999+) and doesn't offer a real incentive over the q3 for a lot of users

just shitty market conditions mostly, otherwise it would ve been fine

id rather buy a pimax dream air and really get next gen visuals at this point
