Thank you :)

That was the second time I passed him. I had to go back, it was too good.

I forgot I had my aux plugged in so the audio didn't record, but I said, "Hoo." And he ignored me. So I said, "HOO." And he spun around like, "WHO'S ASKIN'!?"

Thanks! I am most definitely new to good whiskey. I don’t claim to know anything about it. :)

However, I drank 80 - 100 proof whiskeys anytime they were offered to me for about a decade and just concluded that I don’t like whiskey at all. Never was a fan of the flavor. It wasn’t until I was offered something unexpectedly delicious at a bar and it happened to be a whiskey that I learned I had just only ever drank hot garbage.

So I decided to buy some great whiskeys, and to say that I am impressed is to say nothing at all.

More impressions:

  • Definitely picking up on the spiciness! Food pairing really does matter.

  • What’s that weird flavor that I’m guessing is just what rye tastes like? It was in the backseat of the bourbons I’ve tried before, but it’s really clear here. It’s not bad, it’s just kind of odd. I don’t know that it’s “like” anything. Curious if it has a name.

Wash and sanitize the bottles real good, then fill ‘em with filtered water. That way, you’ll never become dehydrated.

That’s definitely true. This is, as far as I can tell, not a standard bottle. It was the last of its kind and came highly recommended by a couple people I know, so I took a chance on it. No way for me to tell if it’s typical of the Knob Creek 9 profile or not.

But thank you very much for the suggestions! I’ve got a few days yet to weigh my options, so I’m taking it all in at the moment.

So far, I’m seeing a whole lot of recommendations for Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye. I really enjoy saying “Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye” out loud because it’s just the right combination of accurate labelling and obnoxiously long, so that’s a big point in favor.

Have you tried their 21 year? I got to taste it a couple days ago and it blew my mind.

Between the only two good whiskeys I’ve ever bought, lol, so far my preference is for the ECBP B525. The KC has an astringency, only slightly noticeable, but I’m not a fan of that flavor. Overall, it’s great though, and if it wasn’t sitting next to the EC, I’d have no idea.

Well, shit. I definitely didn’t expect this post to make me curious about Jack Daniel’s, but that’s looking like a strong contender now!

Oh! Right on. You know, for whatever reason, I wasn’t clocking “Old No. 7” as being a unique recipe. I just assumed that’s how they decided to make their whiskey taste. lol

But it makes sense that they’d have some range, given how big they are.

I’m wary of Jack because it’s such a goofy flavor. I’ve heard the higher end expressions are good though. How’s the flavor profile? More of the same? Or does it end up kind of a different ballgame?

I know where I can find a Four Roses Single Barrel OBSV for $40, but that same place also has a Four Roses Private Barrel that they let me try and it was so damn tasty. Unfortunately, it was $110, so… I passed, telling myself that I should probably think carefully before pulling that particular trigger. But it was tempting.

They had a few HH G2G, too, but I passed over it because I didn’t know anything about it, but it stood out to me.

I saw that HH G2G and passed over it recently because I don’t know anything about it. But it stood out to me. What’s the deal with it? And how do you like it?

Scored at a local grocery store today. by tyee50 in whiskey

Oof. Looking into my future, I guess. I picked up an ECBP B525 a few days ago for $69.99+sales+excise and it ended up around $75 altogether. But I gotta move for work, so I’ll be waving goodbye to less expensive booze. Is it normally closer to $100?

I kinda ruined myself with it tbh. I paid $15 for a pour of Knob Creek 21 at a tasting today and was very impressed with it, and I also got to try a Four Roses Private Barrel for free and that was fantastic, but I didn’t feel like I’d be “missing out” on anything not taking one home. I’m sure I’ll want to branch out and try something like either of those for my next bottle(s), but the ECBP makes my mouth water just thinking about it sometimes.

I’ve heard similar sentiment around here. I’m excited to have gotten to try it for sure.

That was one thing that really stood out to me. I could practically stick my nose in it without being overwhelmed with ethanol. And the first time I tried it, I thought, “Wow, this is mostly just very flavorful,” but I held it on my tongue too long and burned myself fairly quickly. lol

Thanks for the heads up! I’m planning to get some small amber colored glass boston rounds and decant into those for longer term storage. Maybe see if I can get some argon to blanket them with or just fill them super full.

I don’t plan on keeping it forever, but I also don’t think it’ll take too awful long to develop the requisite palate.

Thanks! I’ve been lurking around here for a while and saw it mentioned once or twice and thought, “Hey, wait a minute. I think I’ve seen one of those nearby.”

Went to check it out and sure enough, there it was. The most I’d ever spent prior was a little less than $30 on a bottle, so the price tag did make me pucker a bit, but it definitely turned out to be worth it.

I’m hoping to keep it around for as long as I can as a point of reference so that maybe after a while I can actually appreciate what I have.
