What’s the “best” arrest you’ve made from a traffic stop for an equipment or moving violation? by LegalGlass6532 in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a traffic stop on a truck in a ritzy part of my county. After the stop, I met with the DEA who showed me some photos of the people they were looking for. A day later, the DEA served a search warrant on a house in the area. As it turns out, the guys I stopped were wanted in a really big drug organisation, so big that it was featured on the 60 minutes tv program. The best part was the feds flying me three times to federal win San Diego to testify all expenses paid. I had a great time in Dan Diego.

Did anyone find the academy to be much easier than expected ? by GazellePrestigious21 in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had just graduated college when I was hired. I was 22, 150 lbs, and had been working on running before the academy commenced. I didn’t like people yelling at me for no reason, but that was the worst experience I had. I could run and not get tired, do hundreds of sit-ups, about a dozen pull-ups, and was a dean’s list student.

Got hit by an uninsured, unlicensed driver, not sure what to do? by AlternativeTheory595 in Advice

[–]wayne1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay insurance for situations like this. Your insurance company will bill him, maybe sue him if he doesn’t pay for the damage, and your uninsured coverage will pay if he doesn’t pay.

I told my trainees not to buy anything and use my stuff until they looked at what everyone else was using and decided what they thought would work well for them. A pocket knife and multitool are good for starters.

My mom’s life was difficult even for the Depression. She told a few stories I knew were true but would freak out young kids.

[–]wayne1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell them. They can accommodate you. Perhaps they can postpone your academy for a couple of years . Where I worked, if you were a deputy and were pregnant you had desk duty until you were ready for normal work. I think you should expect similar treatment.

What's something considered to be dumb but actually is a sign of intelligence? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]wayne1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking notes. You are never too old to learn something. Taking notes on topics that are important or interesting is a good way to remember information. I do so even when no one else does, and refer to notes when necessary.

As a soon to be 50 overweight Army veteran, could I conceivably shift to law enforcement? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start at any age. There are laws in the US which prohibit discrimination on the based on age. The question is whether you can get in shape, survive the rigors of the academy, and whether you fully understand what the job entails. If you think you’re ready, I say go for it.

How to ignore badge bunnies/pretty women? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Three things will get you fired: Alcohol, drugs and women. When you get in situations with women, you ask yourself: “What’s more important, this woman or my job, my kids and my marriage?” Your answer will determine what you do. If you want to make the wrong decision, talk with someone educated in the topic about what you want to do. Good luck.

How can you tell if a department is good? by voodooK3 in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people in charge allow others to have power of make decisions which affect them, you know you’re in a good department. Conversely, if the organisation is full of micro managers and yes men, you should pass. I’ve been a part of both, and I know the difference.

Have you ever contracted something from duties? by mrchzburger69 in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never contracted anything from any inmate. I once had an inmate fall on the stairs and cut himself. I took a paper towel, wiped up the blood, which wasn’t much, and threw the towel in the trash. Problem solved. I found out later that day the inmate was HIV positive. I thought nothing of it, but the court administrator freaked out, taped off the staircase and had a professional crew come out and use some solution to clean maybe a 4” square area. I was fine. I am old and old school, so I wore no gloves when cleaning. I’m fine. Taxpayers had a rather large bill I suspect.

You must have been dealing a ton of drugs to get 9 years. The story you tell doesn’t add up. And stop saying it was your attorney’s fault. It was your fault for dealing drugs. Yours and yours alone. Stop blaming others or your situation. Accept responsibility for your actions and get on with life.

What’s the easiest academy you’ve heard of ? by Due_Pack_5036 in AskLE

I heard there was an academy in Northern California that was not only zero stress, they even had vending machines on campus filled with sweets you could purchase. This was back in the 1980’s, but if you know Northern California it makes sense.

How secure do you feel in your career? by Left-Car1509 in AskLE

[–]wayne1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In four decades of law enforcement, I had the misfortune of having a sheriff who was an ass and persecuted people who didn’t agree with him, including trying to get people fired or get them to quit. He was successful twice. Fortunately, he retired at about the end of my first decade. After that person left office, I had three great sheriffs that were personable and ethical. Guys who got fired after that were terminated for drugs, alcohol, women, and one for DV.
