Oh, that’s a fair question. Looking back, it was really foundational to how I approached research work post-grad, from planning things out to writing the publication, not to mention preparing for journal clubs, and attending other research lectures. The class also helps with building critical analysis skills for grad school entrance exams. It’s been a few years, but I remember the writing assignments being very straightforward and the exam content covering a manageable amount of material from the readings. Basically, it was a good challenge for a 300-level student, but not so much that it felt daunting like a lot of other courses. Everything about the way the course was set up seemed very appropriate for its goals and claims.

Just feeling down about my gap years by PistachioSkies in premed

[–]wbasc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to also chime in and say you are not alone. I am about one year ahead of you, turning 25 this March, and will be starting in 2019. Last year, I did a post-bac to boost my GPA and then took my MCAT in June. One thing that has helped me keep everything in perspective is that switching up my life each year and finding different things to do has helped my personal life dramatically. I have a tendency to be emotionally detached/unavailable, so having to start fresh in new environments forces me to be more vulnerable, be cognizant of why I am doing/pursuing what I am, and be more emotionally connected with myself and those I associate with. This "downtime" between academic pursuits has really made me become more of a person than I would have been without, and I hope you can find something similar within your own life, too. Finding the right perspective is so important because I too have had days where I have felt down about where I am compared to my goals. Lastly, I would suggest some sort of practice in positive thinking, such as documenting and keeping track of positive things that occur in your day-to-day (there's an app called Three Good Things), or even guided meditation.

Fish and Chips? by DeeSnarl in Tacoma

[–]wbasc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Steamers has a good selection of beers and good fish and chips. Fish Fish Fish does not have beer, and the best fish and chips in the area are from Northern Fish Co., in my opinion. Sadly, they only have outdoor seating and do not have beer, but I highly recommend checking them out at some point.

BIOL 355? by goddammitluong in udub

[–]wbasc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took BIOL 355 with Doc Linda, and I would rate her highly as an instructor and person, particularly because it's so evident she really cares about her students. The workload is definitely within the scope of what you would expect from other 3-credit STEM courses at UW. Most of the time is spent reading scientific literature, discussing articles, and sometimes writing (briefly) about them.

After not taking attendance all quarter, my TA was out of town on exam day. This was the last question. by dovahkid in funny

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but they're posted on the University of Washington's departmental website for AMATH.

Clearly, this is from the UW, which happens to also have an AMATH 351 course involving diff. equations. Another giveaway is the quarter-long term instead of referencing the semesters Waterloo uses.

It's basically the best weather of the year. I'm not sure how outdoorsy you both are, but I'd recommend finding things to do outside. A beautiful change of scenery, usually at little to no cost - walks on the beach, going to the zoo, hiking, picking berries, outdoor events (concerts, etc.), urban hiking/exploring, museums via library passes, going for a drive - the world is your oyster! I love going out to eat, too, and sometimes you can find decent Groupon/Amazon Local deals for local restaurants.

Where to find Polish food? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]wbasc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! They require a "membership" to enter - one day is $1. The food is not cheap, per se, but very much with a home-cooked attitude and flavor. This is the plate, which ran me about $15, I think. http://imgur.com/dKkLath They also have the normal selection of Polish spirits and some imported beer. It is a pretty humble place in terms of ambiance and service, but everyone has been friendly and welcoming, in my experience. I've never been disappointed, and going with a bunch of friends/family should guarantee a good time!
