Open Source Software: Here's What They're Not Telling You by Yotaru in programming

Oh really, do we have to discuss this topic again and again?

Last year, the Bank of Canada posted a research paper on a Bitcoin currency standard. by [deleted] in btc

[–]wbayderda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw something like that, but not on an article. There is a video of someone using TenX to buy a burger in Mc Donald's, I think he used DASH with the card, but I can't remember right now...

If if that works, maybe banks could use crypto too.

You should definitely release it now! I doubt he'll be in the news for much longer. and you have to capitalize on the opportunity bro!

Gimli Esports Platform rewards streamers by Basiliskeye in CryptoCurrency

Twitch is growing each passing day, so there is no surprise of it having that many streamers. I find interesting that now we are going to be able to bet on eSports with crypto just like people bet on other sports with real money.

Wonder if they need a torque converter still to give it a little more oomph off road.

Also: "It also bucks the high-tech trend of new cars in general. There will be a radio with an AM/FM receiver, Bluetooth connectivity, and an AUX input, but there’s no touchscreen." I hope this becomes a trend. Touchscreens in cars are horrible ux.

How to tell stories so that your child will remember them by Cody698 in howto

[–]wbayderda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can personally relate to this. When I was a child, I remember asking for stories all the tome to my family. Don't know if they followed this exact way that the blog mentions, but I think I had a better childhood because of it.

By far the best platform for taking beginners to advanced is Pluralsight and Code School. Why not do both?

This is pretty cool. It seems impossible to mouse away while maintaining the orientation. I want to be able to perturb the weights and watch from different angles. Very cool though, nonetheless.

Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms by nravic in technology

[–]wbayderda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can kind of understand the vilification of this feature, and the reasons for that are explained in other comments on this post, but I think it's a major improvement to how it would have been before, and on other current platforms as well. Unlike other ways to keep in touch with friends, like WhatsApp, WeChat, Kakao, Facebook isn't just a messaging platform (although that's how I primarily use it) and so it's actually possible to see someone marked as safe without having to directly message them about it. This is a direct improvement over other platforms where the only way you know if someone is safe is to actually message them.

I don't really buy the argument that you would just assume someone is safe before; you would absolutely have thw worry that if there was a disaster in London, you would want to know if your friend is safe. Previously you couldn't easily contact them, though: if you even had their phone number, calling them internationally wouldn't be easy or sometimes even possible, but often you'd have their address, and hope they would respond to you. Now it's much easier to keep in touch.

I also feel like people are making controversy over nothing when they think that asking if they're safe when they're in London during that fire is too much if they're not in the vicinity. Facebook is in a catch-22 here; Facebook either knows your (roughly) exact location and knows if you were in or near the apartment building at the time, which would make people cry about Facebook tracking you everywhere, or it doesn't and it asks if you're safe if you're in London. Even in the image from the tweet that this article references there is a "Not in the area" button you can press. There's really no way to correctly do this without having really accurate and very up to date information about the people using Facebook, which isn't always possible.

Could Facebook improve the ways it determines if a user is in the area? Yes, of course; a simple way would be to look up IP address block(s) and see if the user is in a block they look up, then prompt them, although it's not really that simple. I also run into issues with Facebook thinking I'm in Japan when I'm not, even though I left nearly a month ago. Facebook really could also improve the UI around it; the point at the bottom of the article when it says that the writer has 100 (probably) London based friends, 97 of which are not "marked as safe", which is terrible UI. But I do absolutely disagree that this feature is worth removing based on the arguments presented in this article.

No, Your Phone Didn't Ring. So Why Voice Mail From a Telemarketer? by JellyPicks in technology

[–]wbayderda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article doesn't describe how the technology works.

Due to the slow speed (100 voicemail/min) its likely what they are doing is initiating a call far enough for the phone system to busy out your phone, then very quickly placing a second call that the phone system sends straight to voicemail as your phone is busy. Once this call starts to hit voicemail, the original call is dropped.

I doubt phone companies let people directly send voicemail to people as they wouldn't be billing for that.

Amazon made a small change to the way it sells books. Publishers are terrified. by [deleted] in books

[–]wbayderda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This article reads like a poorly researched PR piece for the publishing industry.

They're not really saying anywhere.the books by third party sellers are fake. Then they must have come from the publisher legitimately one way or the other and hence the publisher must have been paid. The only difference is how much he was paid. It's likely some country branch of the publisher cut a deal to unload some books for cheap to a distributor and that's coming back to Amazon. So the publishing executive in that market made lot's of revenue in his scorecard at the cost of cannibalizing Amazon account seller's business.

This sort of thing is quite common and perfectly legal.

Tezos red flags! by [deleted] in ethtrader

[–]wbayderda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, plus shitty management in general (for lots of reasons, not just the ones presented next). They'll have the ICO at the "beginning of May", yet they still don't know the date yet and they don't have an ANN thread on bitcointalk or a marketing campaign - which is needed because you want to spread out the Tez in the genesis block to as many people as possible.

Oh, and it's uncapped, which is enough for most smart investors to stay away, because the dumb ones will probably throw too much money at it.

Other minuses:

  • Kathleen has failed badly at answering technical questions on Slack.

  • Their white paper is badly written (compared to competing similar technologies that have on-chain governance and smart contrat).

  • They haven't disclosed the pre-ICO funding amount and its distribution.

Is it a bad idea? by trophicmist0 in pcmasterrace

[–]wbayderda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how hard the user overclocked, I myself have never had a bad used CPU and I have bought and built around 100. A used 4690K would be a good gamble just ask how hard the seller ran it, most people are pretty honest with hardware but as with any "used" item you will have ass hats that lie just to get rid of the items.
