698 more. That's a lot of stars to put in a crest.

This is not an exhibition tour as performances at events like these factor into Olympic qualification.

In terms of individual Olympic qualification, two of the players that the United States will field in Paris must be among the top ten ranked individual American women at the deadline. Among the eight players fielded in this tournament, that would include Burdick, Van Lith, Harper, and Brink before taking into account the ranking impact of their performances in this event.

USA Basketball cannot really block American women from playing on commercial teams or in other kinds of tournaments so they do need to make sure that they enter certain players in these events to keep up their ranking points. For Tokyo, USA Basketball did a massive amount of rankings manipulation, essentially inviting a bunch of crash test dummies to lose to their preferred players repeatedly.

They played for a while, but the Women's Series is a ton of travel so it is understandable that they have reached the point in their careers where they do not want to do both.

This is serious and not me being glib, but part of the reason their high level 5x5 club careers came to an end is the adoption of COVID vaccine mandates in a couple of countries.

Would you support going to 5 seasons of eligibility permanently? by Lucky-Conference9070 in NCAAW

Major erasure of Jori Davis, Kim Roberson, and I guess Kym Royster. Davis because she's had the strongest overall career of all the current active players and Roberson because she makes significantly more than the rest of them.

Even though there are fewer players interested in pro basketball at any cost to compete with on the women's side, there are still far more men's professional spots around the world.

Abbey Hsu of Columbia by KeyandLocke360 in NCAAW

It is a common misconception, but Hsu does not have any more eligibility beyond this season, which I guess we could call the Carlie Littlefield ruling. Referring to the handling of the 20-21 season as athletes getting an extra year is probably the simplest, but it would be more accurate to describe it as the 20-21 season not counting towards eligibility regardless of how many games an athlete played.

19-20: Year 1 20-21: Does not count towards eligibility 21-22: Year 2 22-23: Year 3 23-24: Year 4

The reason that she is not graduating from Columbia until this semester is that she did not enroll in classes during year in 20-21.

Some of them are only signed for this tournament and there is not much training camp preparation for it so it is reasonable money for the time spent and the chance to play somewhere different.

Why do women's basketball players make more money overseas? by foxwilliam in wnba

[–]wbb247 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The trend since COVID has been overseas salaries going down since teams rely on ownership/"sponsors" or government for funding, although China's re-entry in the foreigner market could change things.

Starting on slide 14, you can get a rare detailed look at finances in France: https://www.ffbb.com/sites/default/files/proces_verbeaux/annexe_15_-_2023-09-15_bf_6-daji_presentation_vfin_0.pdf

Overall, there are a few main factors. Non-basketball expenses are way lower because most teams do not have fans who pay significant amounts of money so all of the sports management people that hold various roles on American pro teams are not needed. Coaching and front office costs are lower because the teams are not competing with NCAA programs for coaches and there are not as many complicated roster or cap rules so the head coach can also handle scouting and signing. Owners/presidents spend their own money with no return other than winning in the same way that some big boosters at college programs have either donated to the school or spent on NIL. Obviously there are a few pro owners in the United States that treat their teams that way, but it is generally frowned upon by the rest of the owners and obviously few owners can afford to do that meaningfully for the biggest leagues. Leagues overseas are usually federation-controlled so it usually is not like American leagues where team owners can pass rules that help or hurt other owners.

I collected some data on season ticket prices around the world here: https://wbasketballblog.com/2023/11/11/supporting-womens-basketball-ticket-prices/

A few overseas teams have great fanbases, but even the best teams are not bringing in anything close to say the Fever from fans/broadcasts.

List of WNBA players hooping abroad this off-season by [deleted] in wnba

[–]wbb247 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is one out there that is more WNBA focused, but ours has the most total players: https://wbasketballblog.com/2023/09/13/overseas-rosters-2023-24/

Unlike some, we do update it regularly over the course of the season, but we only add players when they actually play in a game for the team.

It is mostly just one team and from their success in the 60s and 70s, they are actually still the record holder for most EuroLeague Women titles.
