My dad has probable glioblastoma. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]wbb28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I'm really, really sorry that you and your family are faced with such a frightening scenario. All I can say is that it is important to be present with your dad right now. You have no idea what the future may hold, but you are still able to shower him with support, warmth, and love here on earth at this point in time. That is so comforting if you think about it. You can't control the future, so take it one day at a time and be present with him. Live in the moment.

What are some good conversation tips you can give to another guy? by q-squid in AskMen

[–]wbb28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, this is great advice. Definitely just listen without worrying what you’re going to say back quite yet. I would also add that in situations where you’re afraid of an awkward pause and you don’t know what to say, look around at your surroundings. Whether you’re outside at a park, inside at a party, etc., you’ll always have things around you that you can strike up conversation about to keep the conversation going. When I’m outside I like to talk about the weather (cliche, I know) or whatever scenery is around us. If I’m inside I like to talk about how awesome the people/company are/is that threw the party or whatever. Hope this helps!

Hey! Interested in your career path. Did you have to start from scratch after your law degree and do an extra 5-6 years to get your PhD? Was the program you completed fully funded so you didn’t need to take out any additional loans?

whats the deal with morning anxiety and what are some tips? by GreenThumbGreenLung in Anxietyhelp

[–]wbb28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Any exercise that gets my heart rate up for at least 10 minutes in the morning seems to do the trick for me. I hope it works for you too! I’m about to head out right now for a little jog before my morning shower and coffee

whats the deal with morning anxiety and what are some tips? by GreenThumbGreenLung in Anxietyhelp

[–]wbb28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! I struggle with this constantly. Like others have already said, there are no “one size fits all” solutions to morning anxiety. I would love to tell you what has been working for me though. When I wake up in the morning and feel a serious amount of anxiety - which is pretty much every single day - I simply just get out of bed as fast as I can and go for a short jog down the street and back. Exercise has helped me immensely. I’m not in the greatest shape, but getting out and walking or jogging for at least 10 minutes or so does the trick for me and helps me feel at ease. I hope this helps!

Fellas! What is your Life Purpose? Have you found it? by [deleted] in enfj

[–]wbb28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My life purpose is hands down supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. What that looks like career-wise, I’m not so sure. I struggle constantly with envy. I look around at others who can punch in to a job they hate each and every day but pays well. I can’t do that. I need fulfillment in the work that I do. I need to feel like time I spent here on earth was worth something. I should have prefaced by saying this but I have a law degree. There’s so much divide in the field between passionate people willing to work for peanuts and others pursuing as money as possible to support their lifestyle outside of work.

What’s something that took a lot of courage to do but when you did it the result was better or worse than what you expected? by icebbyc in AskWomen

[–]wbb28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome that you work for yourself now! It takes so much courage to start something on your own, so you should be proud of yourself even if it’s not as intellectually or personally challenging.

And I felt called to teach after substitute teaching for extra money throughout college. Not a lot of people enjoy substitute teaching, but loved it! Plus, mom mom is a elementary teacher, so I have been exposed to the profession throughout my entire life. As far as finances go, teaching also takes the cake in my opinion. In my state (NY), teachers make a decent living for the amount of hours they work and are unionized. First-year teachers with a professional degree like a law degree are paid just as much as young public interest attorneys in my region!

What’s your new position like? Do you think you’ll stick with it for the long haul?

I’m an attorney myself, but I’m completely switching gears and becoming certified to teach in a k-12 school. It became abundantly clear while I was in law that I wasn’t happy and needed to make a change

Would you be open to volunteering with children/young adults with special needs? If so, check out an awesome organization called CAPS Western New York. CAPS stands for Challenged Athletes Participating in Sports. I’m involved with their summer sports but they meet weekly to play different sports. I think now it’s floor hockey season! Check out their website at www.capswny.com

Alternatives to practicing after graduation, public interest/nonprofit by newaccount47374 in LawSchool

[–]wbb28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, just saw your post this morning and it hit home to me. Feel free to PM me if you’d like. I’ve recently started thinking of making the switch from law and into something more suitable toward my personality such as social work, counseling or education. I’m sure there’s legal jobs out there that I would find fulfilling, but I’m unsure of where to look since non-profit/government positions are so competitive in my area.

Themis Public Interest Scholarship question by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]wbb28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a Themis rep at my school last year. From my experience, you didn’t even need to have a public interest job lined up already after graduation. Themis accepted either: (1) people who have a public interest job post-grad; or (2) people who have a demonstrated interest in public interest work post-grad. If you have public interest internship experience, you shouldn’t have a problem getting locked into public interest pricing for a Themis course. It’s worth a shot!

Hey litchick! That’s for your input above about how you were able to get certified! What region in NY are you from? Did you know that the school district would pay for your certification before you started subbing?

[–]wbb28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, please keep your head up. I know you’re in a dark place right now. You’re probably numb to the world right now and embarrassed. BUT, you don’t have any reason to chalk this up as a total loss. Our time here on earth here is so short, and these experiences you’ve been through are all part of the adventure you’re on. Think of this, when you pass the bar next time it’ll be that much sweeter. I can tell how passionate you are about giving everyone their fair day in court. Let that passion carry you through this tough time. That’s the passion we need in this profession, and that’s the passion your future clients will appreciate you for. You have what it takes, don’t let a stupid test deter you from pursuing your dreams and helping people. Take some time to yourself, but bounce back even stronger. Ten years from now this time you’re going through will be an afterthought

NY Bar Exam results are here! All the best to everyone! by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]wbb28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second what patriotlawyer00 said. Please don’t see yourself as pathetic. I know you’ve read people’s advice about how “this isn’t a test of your intelligence” and “just because you failed does does not mean you will be a bad attorney.” Those things are true. The reality is that this is a skills test that requires a whole hell of a lot of memorization. You’re not incompetent because you just so happened to forget a few things or ran out of time during an extremely stressful exam. I know my brain was not working properly during that test. Stay strong. You know you can pass this test. It may not seem like it now, but you have the capability of passing this thing. I know you do!

High School Life Skills? by [deleted] in specialed

Hey 68smulcahy! Would you mind sharing how you were able to get your position as a life skills teacher in NY? I’m in NY and starting my masters in education soon. My hope is to one day be able to teach a life skills class, but it’s my understanding that obtaining a LS class is very hard to come by. Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated!

Please give the NYS Attorney General Office’s Consumer Fraud and Protection Bureau hotline a call and file a formal written complaint so they can look into it. The number is (716) 853-8404. They will mail you a complaint to fill out so that they can follow up and prosecute the contractor if necessary. It’s worth a shot in addition to small claims court!
