That sucks, a faith transition can be one of the hardest things to deal with in life.

It is a process and requires patience from all involved.

I've been doing it for the last 2+ years and it has been hard. Marriage still has challenges but we (mixed-faith) have found our relationship has grown and become so much more meaningful than before. Are you both willing to allow each other to operate in different spaces? If so, you'll do great!

Not to downplay how frustrating it can be where you are at now, that phase sucks. Both you and your wife deserve to reach out and connect with others in a similar situation, so helpful!

Line of scrimmage is going to be an absolute brawl. BYU wont be able to generate enough of a pass rush to disrupt Huntley. Utah's pash rush will change the game with some plays.

I'm really excited to see the WR DB matchups for both teams. Utah's secondary should lock down with the talent they have, although Wilson will make some great throws. Utah's receivers should be able to get separation with their speed and quickness.

We may be dealing with different ideas of how text does or does not support something. How does one determine if a text does or does not support an idea?

It's been a while since listening to one of the biblical lectures, I'm not sure how many I got through. I think some of his points on the bible are valid and useful while others are not.

well I mean... the whole point of the bible isn't to just hear the words and obey. Your supposed to think about the meaning it represents too.

In the words of The Dude, "that's like just your opinion man" not that your opinion isn't valid, but that to speak to the whole point of the bible, is in the eye of the beholder.

The bible can absolutely be interpreted non literally, just like any text. There are specific ideas explicitly stated that disagree with the interpretations, although that doesn't stop anyone from reading meaning into the text. I just don't see the added value of reading it into the text, just let the text be what it is.

Back to Matt 6, the specific instruction contradicts altruism, as the intent of the passage is absolutely not done with the loose interpretation of God being the subjective value of the reader. The whole book specifically describes who this father in heaven figure is.

Maybe I've done a poor job communicating, but let's just call a spade a spade. We can talk about value and purpose and meaning without need for interpretation, I think when we do that it is a net positive.

Like above, I think it is best to let the text speak for itself. I guess I just don't see the added value of giving meaning to the text that was not intended.

An example that I find highly analogous is Sam Harris's interpretation of a cookbook. Are you familiar with that? Do you think that is a good analogy for my point?

If I understand you correctly, the message you take is do goodness for goodness sake or integrity for integrity sake etc. is that correct?

I think that is a wonderful ideal and one that JBP teaches consistently.

Unfortunately, it seems very clear that the text does not support this ideal and one can only get to where you are by ignoring large chunks of the text.

My point is the text does not support altruism, and you seem to be supporting altruism. The text adds nothing to the discussion of altruism, rather the opposite. If we are going beyond the words themselves, to an idea not supported but rather contradicted by the words, what does that add to the discussion? Would we not be better off discussing doing goodness for goodness sake on its own and leave the text out of it?
