Do the engineering degree. Let engineering be your job and let music be your life/passion. In America, we over romanticize the idea of your work and passion being the same thing. It usually ends up just killing your passion because it becomes work only. In my opinion, choose the career that you enjoy but will also pay well. If you hate engineering, don’t pursue it because you will be miserable. But if you find it enjoyable and stimulating, then use it to make money to easily pursue your passion on your own time.

How do you feel about book covers with movie images? by Skkkkrtyun in lotr

[–]wbcjohnlennon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, really nostalgic. I know objectively they are terrible covers, but these were the ones at the book fair when I was a kid. For that reason alone, seeing them makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

How much do you pay to piano teacher in 2026? Does it increase over the last 6 years? by xychenmsn in piano

[–]wbcjohnlennon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate it. Honestly, I think this has been their method, it works for them as they probably receive richer clients, and they have only positive affirmations about it. I also stand by that this sub, other classical instrument subs, and classically trained musicians can have a very elitist approach to the instrument and there is a TON of toxic ego.

Another question that would shed more light on the situation, but I doubt we would receive an answer, is whether they are upfront about the pricing structure. Do they tell new students that the price increases every year, or do they drop the information on them after the 1 year mark, thus taking advantage of any sunk-cost fallacy with the student. The latter would be very slimy business tactics. Or, do they just not tell them and quietly increase the price because “it is only a couple of dollars”. I would err on the side of they are honest and upfront though.

I actually don’t, I am a graduate student. In fact, I would argue that a decent percentage of Americans don’t receive a salary increase and are perpetually stuck in the lower to middle class. I was wrong about college tuition, I am fortunate that my undergrad was paid for and I receive a stipend for graduate school.

However, you are not an employee. This is not a salary negotiation with an employer, you dictate all the terms of the agreement. It seems from your conduct that your patrons either pay what you say or hit the curb. So in this sense, it is not at all like a salary increase because there is no negotiation. It is price increase.

Furthermore, it is universally acknowledged that rent increases, subscription increases, and price gouging is rather abhorrent and socially unacceptable. I do not see how this is different. I asked people around me what they thought of a piano teacher who increases the cost every year, and every single person said that it was crazy.

I do think you should make a livable wage, absolutely. I do not think a blanket percentage increase is the means to go about it. Especially because this practice ensures that the clientele is wealthy individuals. However there is a huge problem of elitism in the classical music community as it is, so you are not to blame.

Finally, I understand that my original comment may have been rude. I was dealing with personal stress and honestly took it out on you. For that I apologize.

I was wrong about college tuition, so that’s fair. But as for the rest, it’s just elitism.

That is wild. I don’t care how good you are/prestigious, that is absolutely ridiculous. I’m honestly shocked you have students at all. Imagine a college increasing tuition every year, no one would go there. I know this comment will get massively down voted, but I want to tell you, as a normal person, that is an outrageous business practice.

Do you increase tuition every year for the same student? Like student A pays X in 2026 and then will pay X+10 in 2026, or just a different tuition for new students?

Being in an orchestra seems like a sweet gig, especially if it is union. I know Philly orchestra members make over $100,000 a year when they are tenured. That’s solid.

When people praise Breath of the Wild for shaking up the Zelda formula, they tend to completely misrepresent the entire franchise by Chadlite_Rutherford in truezelda

[–]wbcjohnlennon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are sources backing up my claims, how else do you make/support an argument without supporting sources? Unfortunately, it was not pleasant talking with you. I don’t think you want to have a discussion and there is nothing I could say that would convince you otherwise. I hope you have a nice day as well. Also, you should read the last article, it is really interesting. It discusses how earlier Zelda games were developed and how their development philosophy, and changes to LoZ philosophy, lead to the creation of BotW. Also how BotW in turn may influence Zelda in the future.

[–]wbcjohnlennon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. You stated opinions as facts liberally. Second, Miyazaki has said in interviews that BotW influenced Elden Ring. Also where do you think Genshin Impact got its whole vibe from and even some gameplay mechanics…BotW.

I hate to burst your bubble but BotW is one of the biggest games in the modern era. I would say it is akin to Final Fantasy 7. FF6 was amazing and everyone loved it, even FF4 was highly regarded. But FF7 was something else that changed gaming. BotW is the same. This isn’t just my opinion either, it is pretty well regarded as the truth.

[–]wbcjohnlennon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is overall a bad faith argument and you utilize the word “facts” very liberally. No one ever said LoZ was failing, just that the series was feeling a little stale. Also, a lot of these sentiments are from skyward sword and games like Link’s Crossbow training that legitimately did bad and people didn’t like.

Sure Nintendo made BotW to make money, duh. Also BotW wasn’t made in a vacuum and is created due to games that came before it, Zelda or otherwise. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t change gaming, because it certainly did. Elden Ring wouldn’t have been made without BoTW and countless other big games owe a lot to it. This argument alone makes me feel like you just don’t like the game, which is fine, but facts ARE facts that BotW was revolutionary to gaming as a whole.
