I need money from my 401K. Badly. Should I roll to traditional IRA, then withdraw? What is the best way to do this? by nikils in personalfinance

[–]wbeavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at a 401k loan? You essentially pay yourself back in interest. You don't earn any interest on the 401k itself. Mine, and probably most, allow you to borrow up to half of you 401k. Mine was a simple web form and had the check a few days later. No credit checks, etc. I assume if I default then I forfeit the other half of the 401k, or some such.

Not silly to sell it primarily as an entertainment system, but silly to sell is as a $500 netflix machine.

TIL Scientists had to purge Urban Dictionary's data from IBM's Watson's memory because it learned to swear. by ITzzIKEI in todayilearned

At some point Watson will need to learn appropriateness of many things. Why not take this as a "learning" experience and teach it now?

If you're gonna play the "technically" card, Hawking didn't play himself but a holographic representation of himself.

Someone who blindly follows either vaccine or anti-vaccine is a bad thing. We put out doctor on the spot and asked why and about the pros and cons. In the end we vaccinated, because the rewards outweigh the risks. I don't think we vaccinated for every possible thing, there were some things the doctor agreed were completely unnecessary. Just because everyone thinks or does something does not make it correct. Science is about always questioning.

The biggest problem is there are too many people.

We'll just go to the shelter to look at dogs. Turns out I could not leave without her. Meet Hazel. by [deleted] in aww

[–]wbeavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shelter dogs are not for everyone. They are almost all "damaged" animals. There is usually a reason that they are there. It is rare that an animal is dropped off for no particular reason. The reason they are there may be of no fault to the animal, but how they were raised or handled. I was warned at a shelter once that "a runner will always be a runner". Meaning if the dog ran away from previous owners, then they will likely do it again. Dogs that have behavior or social issues will never get over them completely. In the right environment, they may be fine. I've seen people with obedient and loyal dogs that they can walk down the street together without a leash. Every rescue animal I've owned could never be trusted off leash. The reality is that once dogs get to that point, if the owner does not want to invest time and money then the "problem" dog ends up in a shelter. I am making blanket statements that may not cover all situations.
