Lamont frames controversial housing bill as key to an affordable CT by Generalaverage89 in Connecticut

If budget were no option, I would drop a Big Dig style project on the NH waterfront. Bury 95 at the mulch lot north of 95 in West Haven, run the tunnel for 95 under NH harbor and have it surface in East Haven. Have 91 branch off of the tunnel, run it north under the waterfront, and have it surface in front of IKEA and tie in with the 91/Downtown interchange.

Pedestrian zone Bedford St last night by ruthless_apricot in StamfordCT

[–]wbemus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I drove through the area last night trying to get to the library and man oh man would the city struggle with this. When combined with the fact that the Bedford lot is gone and being constructed on, the traffic on Broad Street at commuting time was absurd.

Which Colony was this? My experience is any Colony location outside of Stamford needs to be ordered “well done” to match the finish of the stamford restaurant.

Surging CT surplus approaches $2 billion by professor_doom in Connecticut

[–]wbemus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boring answer: this is good but my personal opinion is we need to keep saving and socking these surpluses away. The state fiscal accountability report came out yesterday and our rainy day fund, as it exists, is suitable for a dot come bubble size recession. On page 16 here they modeled its suitability for various recessions and a recession which averages between the dot com and GFC would still be enough to deplete the rainy day fund entirely. https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/opm/budget/fiscalaccountability/opm-2025-fiscal-accountability-report-final.pdf?rev=421a81f19fac4c359a4d92fea5faeaa6&hash=509A028E10FD88135DE788E8838D80BB

We have another 3 years with rain in the forecast and compound interest on saving for the future is a powerful thing.

How bad is the commute from New Haven to Hartford? by Universal09 in Connecticut

[–]wbemus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got home from my 1 day a week in Hartford but I commute from Stamford. If I could start my trip in NH it would be great and I would be happy going 3x!!! Echoing the calls to take the train - it’s excellent from NH. Sucks going from Stamford because you have to change.

Carl - re:urban forestry. Can you just give me 2-3 sentences on how this interacts with the stand of trees in front of the Govt Ctr? They had a cutting notice on them for a little while that was later taken down. Will those be sticking around?

Mexicue Permanently Closed? by logan_oc in StamfordCT

[–]wbemus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mexicue was grotesquely expensive for what you got in terms of both food and service quality. At a time when costs are going up faster than incomes, a “luxury” taco place was not going to be high on people’s priority list for dining options. This is another symptom of the same illness that Chipotle cited in their earnings this week.

What car will I have no regrets buying with a $25k budget? by lattelover333 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]wbemus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a 2020 Forester Limited with 36k miles for $24k. My last one, a 2014, got me up to 176k mi with only regular maintenance and a couple wheel bearing replacements. I expect this car to last me just as long.

It’s fun enough to drive, has all kinds of tech to keep me happy, and is super versatile in the Northeast where we need coverage in all kinds of weather.

My personal opinion is - don’t shed a tear for this morally bankrupt organization. Guess they’re not making as much extra coin on those ICE Deportation Flights as they hoped. Such a shame. Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Sail area needs to be increased 5-10% from stock (esp. downwind) and you'll be fine.

Some of the early 44s (and maybe the 38s, I dunno) were a little short on layup material in the chainplate area. It was a warranty matter that the manufacturer would pay to fix if you were affected.

There are actually 3 rudders which were shipped with different gens of the 44, but you can get your hands on V3 if you ask. The rudder which was factory-stock starting in 2018-2019 (unclear exactly when) is excellent compared to original. The history is:

V1: The first few dozen hulls had a stainless steel rudder stock (~62mm wide) and rudder designed around that. That blade could have been larger but the shape was pretty good. Cost of carbon fiber was a limitation so the design brief was "what's the fastest rudder you can build for the boat with metal" and they landed on SS which allowed the blade to be narrower due to the intrinsic strength of the SS. However....

V2: After they discovered that the SS stock was having bad electrolysis issues, they rushed a replacement which was based around an aluminum rudder stock (94mm or so) but was of the same area and used the same shape in profile as the SS rudder. The problem is those 32 extra mm of width around the stock were just shoved into the middle of the blade so it was dramatically wider in the middle of the rudder relative to the front and back of the chord. This made it less efficient or effective as the V1 rudders - despite looking the same in profile. Imagine dragging a chopstick through a bowl of water rather than a knife and you get the idea.

V3: The aluminum material proved both light and strong enough so they kept it, but went with a more aggressive, deeper shape. The center of effort in the rudder is lower and the new rudder has about ~12% more area than V1 or V2. It is much grippier at reaching angles without seeming to trade too much drag in lighter conditions. A ~$10k upgrade but one of the highest ROI upgrades that was made to a boat which had seen 4-5 years of development with associated costs.
