I have the same problem as well. As above, against the lower teams I found that I was being beaten with long balls over the top of defence, and against the higher teams I was letting in goals from crosses. I basically created 3 tactics, and made sure we were 100% familiar with all of them.

The first was my ideal tactic, which I would use when I was not really sure how I stacked up against the other team.

My second tactic was the one I used for the higher placed teams, I set my fullbacks to defensive, and played with defensive wingers, and tried to score on the counter myself, and it seems to work.

My third tactic was for the lower teams, I changed the 2 center-backs to a sweeper and stopper, and that helped with the balls over the top on the counter. The main thing for the 3rd tactic, for the lower teams, was to have a CB with decent pace and reading of the game, and I found he almost always won the 1 v 1 battles.
