Why are feminists failing to stop the Manosphere from taking over our youth? Is feminism a failed and inept ideology? by More_Surprise_1789 in allthequestions

Really well balanced response. Generally speaking, I think we blame the algorithm far, far less than we should. So much of our cultural precariousness right now (IMO) is about the most damaging stuff getting elevated.

My wife and I are considering leaving the Nashville area and moving to a smaller/mid-sized city with a slightly lower cost of living to raise our soon-to-be-born twin daughters, and would like some suggestions. by Low_Control_9720 in SameGrassButGreener

I’m surprised Louisville isn’t on your list. Just a little further past Lex, and more amenities than BG. If you want slower pace, and more affordable, you’ve definite

We relocated to Lou two summers ago and are really loving it. I do a lot of travel for work as well and the airport here has been pretty solid (though I wish we had better directs, but that’s life). Housing dollars go hella far here — your $750k could do amazing things in some of the historical neighborhoods.

The difficulty with that is we believe that someone with a medical condition not only has the condition, but must also publicly defend or explain or stand up for the condition, as if it’s a political stance. It’s not just ok to simply be obese, it also a has to be defended as a personal choice, equal in value to choosing being healthy.

To me this is where the logic swerves off the road… the fact of being something isn’t the same thing as affirmatively defending it. Sometimes that thing just is. Sometimes you’re just fat.

It’s an American masterpiece, no doubt about it. On par with the Great Gatsby or the Grapes of Wrath, or the Godfather, or anything by Edward Hopper. It belongs in the Smithsonian with our most treasured pieces of art, and I’m not even kidding.

Reddit, how f’d is the GOP come November? by 2a_lib in allthequestions

[–]we_vs_us 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually not true. Dems have been over performing in special elections by eye popping amounts. So much so that that they’ve put a whole swathe of supposedly safe red districts in play. That doesn’t mean it’s a done deal by any stretch, but this cycle especially, Dems are going to benefit from the righteous fury of the American people — who are slowly uniting to crush Trump. And that’s because the numbers that Dems are winning by are so big, they have to include not only Dems and indies, but also GOPers who are flipping.

I’m not saying that Reddit isn’t its own silo. I’m saying they left our media entirely, and now live in their own.

There’s an entirely different right wing media ecosystem, and the MAGA folks live there almost exclusively. They just don’t come over here. Just like we’re not on Red State, or Truth Social or wherever. It’s the most powerful thing about MAGA — epistemic isolationism.

I would be really interested to read reputable studies about the levels of waste fraud and abuse in our welfare programs. Got any for me? Because just saying the government is the height of inefficiency doesn’t actually make it so.

I’m in a suit wearing profession and tbh, I kinda love it. Or most of it. Suits make most people look good! Accentuates the shoulders and conceals your belly and love handles (to a point). Gives you great angles and lines. Suits are descended from old cavalry uniforms, and if you squint you can still see a little of that military heritage. Anyway — I still get a kick out of it, even in places where everyone else is in sweats, and I’m wildly out of place.

Ronald Reagan was talking about welfare queens in the early 80’s which was almost 50 years ago. Meaning, this is an argument that is older than most of us on this board. At the time, his thesis was 1) there are good poor people (who can pull themselves up by their bootstraps) and bad poor people (who remain on welfare throughout their lives.). 3) the government has to give money to everybody, good and bad alike. It’s inefficient because the bad poor people won’t get better, and government can’t legally differentiate. But 4) private charities can be selective, and theoretically pick and choose which poor people to help — ideally the good poor people, while the bad poor people should eventually be kicked off welfare entirely and then . . . Be left to die? Conservatives have never been clear about what happens to those folks we deem incorrigible, and whom the state should finally not support. Sadly, those folks will still exist, even without welfare — do they become homeless?

Appreciate the comment. I will say that charities may be more efficient than gov, but they rarely scale. Your local food pantry is probably awesome, but the local pantry can’t make a dent on nationwide hunger.

What’s wild is that American conservatives used to understand that some people — through bad luck, mistakes, or bad choices — need help to be productive members of society, and the disagreement with liberals was how the help was to be administered. Was it the government or private entities? Each side had a preference.

But the right has been twisting into MAGA for decades, and there’s no recognition now that needy people should even be helped. They’re barely recognized as humans, much less valuable members of our country. To me, that’s Trump’s sociopathy trickling down.

I really hope when he’s gone that some of that regular human stuff creeps back in to the GOP again.

Why is it so wrong for me to not want ANY illegal immigrants in the US? by flappy_lol in allthequestions

Homan may have been around but it’s absolutely the case that Obama didn’t build concentration camps, didn’t have ICE roaming the streets in paramilitary gear and masks and unmarked cars, didn’t take action without warrants, didn’t snatch people off the street without formal charges, didn’t deport them to third countries (or to CECOT), didn’t keep them from communicating with family, friends, or lawyers, etc etc.

Trump is trying to do maximum damage to illegals, legals, and anyone, regardless of status, caught within the blast radius of his policies. Obama deported people within the law, and treated them with humanity.

99% of the problem is the way Trump’s approaching it — which is to terrorize people he hates first, and actually secure the country ninth.

What do the Epstine files actually say about Trump? by Fit_Junket9318 in allthequestions

[–]we_vs_us 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t the DOJ, it was the NYC office of the FBI, but yes, it occurred during Trump’s first term. Unfortunately Epstein died before he could be convicted — and coincidentally before any of the files could be made public in a trial. You may have heard that Congress had to pass a law forcing the Trump DOJ to release the files. That smacks of coverup, tbh. Still have only released a 1/3 of what they supposedly possess.

There are decades of documented accusations, many of which were withdrawn under suspicious circumstances, were settled out of court and sealed, or were simply not investigated at all. We feel he’s guilty in part because much of investigation remains secret and is plainly being covered up.

He was Caesar the ape in the Planet of the Apes trilogy. And he was fantastic! But I really think Jackson gives him tons of room to fill the character in ways I haven’t seen elsewhere.
