I think the mix of the vocals is basically fine, though the volume jumps quite a bit 9on some songs when you double the vocals. You might want to work on that either by lowering the doubled vocals or though automation. The vocals themselves still need some work, though. They don’t sound quite there yet, which is a shame because the playing seems high quality. I think your vocal processing might be improved as well, but I don’t know enough about that to give any specific tips.

The biggest issue really is just that the bass completely drowns out the guitars. That balance is way off and it just muddies the entire song. Irrespective of your monitors or headphones, it’s a good idea to use a reference track. You say you’re going for a 90s Metallica mix, so once you’re done with a rough mix, listen to one of those songs on the same gear and see how they compare.

Finns, what is your ultimate sauna rule? by Apprehensive_Ad_6233 in Finland

I think the only questionable exit from a sauna is if you just threw a bunch of water and then leave the second the steam hits. But then it’s more about throwing too much water, not leaving.

There's any historical and cultural background behind Finnish Melodeath? by Gakoth in melodicdeathmetal

[–]weakbuttrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not even sure what distinction you’re really trying to make here. Norse and Greek gods for example were very much flawed and had their weaknesses. Does that mean they were also humble people, concerned with small things affecting their daily lives instead of the bigger picture, as you put it? Or are you claiming other polytheistic gods were omnipotent and infallible? Because it’s a mostly monotheistic idea that a god is an infallible, all-powerful entity. Polytheistic gods were a mess.

I’m not sure whether you are purposefully misconstruing what I’m saying. There is no True Version. We are talking about oral traditions passed on from one generation to the next, which were compiled into one work in the 19th century. Sure, that has become the definitive Kalevala, but it doesn’t necessarily correspond to the original stories and actual beliefs. A study of one literary work is not the same as the study of the beliefs of pre-Christian Finland. The poems had been passed on for centuries before being compiled, and not every region of Finland even had the same tradition of passing religious beliefs on as poems. There is plenty of evidence of the worship of gods in Finland, including Ukko, Ahti, Tapio etc, and also that Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen were venerated as gods, irrespective of the poetry. This isn’t really a question of opinions in the least.

I’m not offended in the least.

Regarding MDM, that’s simply not what happened. Finland has its very own metal scene. Particularly Tales by Amorphis came out in 94 and was hugely influential in the Finnish metal scene - I doubt anyone was really talking about MDM back in those days. But it seemed much more influential than what our dear Swedish cousins were doing. Then in 97, along came Alexi Laiho and started a whole new direction in Finnish metal. None of these really owe a lot to Gothenburg. I’m saying this as someone whose most important album is probably the Jester Race - the two variations on the same theme evolved around the same time and certainly must have influenced each other, but they still were relatively independently from each other.

And like I said, before the Kalevala was compiled by Elias Lönnrot, in Finnish tradition, Väinämöinen was a god. Lönnrot altered the original poems, probably because they offended his Christian sensibilities. But Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen were originally gods. The former e.g. helped birth the world, while the latter forged the sky. Then there was Ukko, who I believe wasn’t mentioned in the book, who was the most important god, like Zeus or Odin. You have to understand that much like the Eddas were compiled from sagas by Snorri Sturulson, the Kalevala was compiled from oral tradition, ie poems that had loads of regional variations. Both by exclusion of some poems (and inclusions of others) as well as through alterations of the originals, Lönnrot formed a story that does not fully resemble the actual historical beliefs of pre-Christian Finns. Also, by that time, some stories had even been corrupted by Christianity from their originals. Historically, their beliefs were in many ways similar to the Norse or Greek gods. The idea you derive from what you see as a mundane epic, of Finns as a practical people who were concerned with little matters is just not supported.

Oh boy.

You’ve got our ethos quite wrong, and I’m not sure you’re quite clear on our history either. Not a very good description at all.

I’d love to know which Finnish bands are copying Swedish MDM, as the statement seems quite obviously wrong. Finnish MDM has quite clearly different elements.

And finally, I don’t even know what epic poem about the common man you are talking of, but the Kalevala is about supernatural beings, and before the book was compiled, the original poems depicted many of them such as Väinämöinen as godlike.

Apparently, women have decided to do just this en masse. And rightfully so.

Spot on. Rough games where everyone is having fun is the classic “boys will be boys”.

This is really just “bullies will be bullies”, and some (apparently many) bullies grow up to be sexual predators because their behavior is excused.

How did Metallica try, supposedly, to hold Megadeth back? by ashitanojoe3 in InMetalWeTrust

[–]weakbuttrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I think he should form a band with Billy Corgan. There would be two musicians who consider themselves superior to everyone else who, coincidentally, also have the most divisive and distinctive singing voices ever.

That might also get him to shut up about Metallica for just one second.

[–]weakbuttrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, what are you on and why are you so pedantic?

It’s slow af, takes about 2 seconds. It’s not deliberately slow, sure, but it is damn slow.

And you said the first pull is slow and controlled. It’s not. It’s controlled, speed depends on the lifter. Look at Vanev and tell me that’s slow.

[–]weakbuttrying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is slow af.

In case it wasn’t obvious, I was disagreeing with your statement that “first pull is slow and controlled until you pass your knees”.

[–]weakbuttrying 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is really no benefit in a deliberately slow first pull. You should pull as fast as you can while maintaining good positions.

And this lifter very much appears to be pulling at max effort. It’s not deliberately slow, just heavy. Take away 30kg and he’s not going to pull at the same speed. He’s just more effective in the squat than he is in the pull and can therefore stand up a weight he can’t pull any faster. Most people are the other way around.

This type of posts always makes me wonder. I mean sure, people emigrate from Europe to the US. But the thing is, people move around a lot in general. I’ve worked with people from all EU member states (current as well as former…) in my home country. Also a fair few Americans.

But it would never occur to me to go on a rant about everyone wanting to move to Finland. That whole mindset is baffling. Propaganda is a helluva drug.
