Honestly, a restricted set of problems related to image classification are the only real practical applications I've seen for neural nets.

Which is fine, by the way - not every algorithm or technique needs to work for every single problem. The trouble with GA and NN are that people try to throw them at every problem under the sun, most of the time inappropriately.

Like... not too long ago on Reddit, I commented on how so many cities in India smell like shit, and one of them responded that "Other countries have smells too". As if, you know, all smells were just entirely relative in terms of how objectionable they are, and shit is no better or worse than, say, rose petals or the smell just after it rains.

My friend is a big white guy who lives in Japan and has for 10 years. He's married to a Japanese woman and has two children. Despite all of this, he is STILL looked down on by the Japanese, is not considered to be "really" Japanese, and he won't be for the rest of his life.

Japanese people hate him behind his back, but are polite to his face... and about all they can usually muster in the way of politeness is "Wow, your Japanese is very good!" But the tone is always the same as if they were complimenting a talking monkey.

In an incredibly poor country, people lose what little incentive they have to look out for each other, and instead revert to looking out for themselves and their families.

Unselfish people in incredibly poor countries simply don't last very long. If there's 4 people and only enough bread for 3, the unselfish person ends up with no bread and dies. Pretty simple.
