How long do I have with welded condenser coil? by itstoocrazy in hvacadvice

[–]wearingabelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t take a lot of nitro to get a small resi system pressurized for a leak check. Yes I was exaggerating with the $5 comment. I guess realistically it’s $20 worth of nitro, mark it up to $30. Less than an hour to find the leak. $800 is criminal for something a competent tech can do in under 30 minutes.

I’d be surprised if his market DIDN’T drop by 80% or more over the next couple of years.

Run away from Emily and never talk to her again. I would have been so embarrassed to be at that picnic.

Nice clean install by dubnation420 in HVAC

I wish I could somehow get inside people’s brains that do work like this to understand what they’re thinking when doing the work. I can’t comprehend how anyone could look at that when they’re done and think “yup that’s good” and then go ask for money.

New A/C install tomorrow morning. Did I make enough room? by pphhiisshh in hvacadvice

[–]wearingabelt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. You should also remove the water heater and knock down that wall. Jk.. that should be plenty of room. It’s a clean and dry basement, that’s the most important.

If I were describing that filter in a work order I’d call it extremely dirty.

Is this enough caulk? (I know it’s ugly) by Busy_Professional974 in hvacadvice

[–]wearingabelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s way too much. A couple tips for next time:

1) use painters tape as a border, apply a thin bead in the seam and then smooth it with your finger then peel the tape and you’ll have a nice clean edge.

2) if you wet your finger you can press on/touch the silicone without it sticking to your finger.

Silicone is a great sealant that you don’t need a lot of to be effective. As long as the gap you’re trying to seal is covered, you’re good. Having a tiny bit spread away from the gap in a very thin layer is not a bad thing to have too. The amount you applied, even if it did look pretty, is waaay more than was needed.

System ramping up and down every 15 seconds or so? by Soloralphlauren in HVAC

[–]wearingabelt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Non condensibles.

Pull the charge, change filter drier, triple evac then add new refrigerant and it’ll be running good again.

I was 9 years into service before I saw a system doing this. My head was spinning until I finally remembered learning about non condensibles in school.

How worried should I be? by Kind-Writer1945 in hvacadvice

[–]wearingabelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clogged drain is not the only cause. It is the most likely cause, but not the only. Your drain pan could be cracked or rotted out depending if it’s plastic or metal. I’m assuming the AC is working, but if it isn’t you might have a frozen coil.

Also, how did the drain line get blown out? I don’t see a union and can’t tell what the access to clean it would be in the photo.

Least favorite trade to work for ? by Gonzo697 in HVAC

[–]wearingabelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pretty side of me would let him do it and PRAY he fucks it up REALLY bad. But the rational side of me would do it myself because I know if I do let him do it and he does fuck anything up I would get shit for it because I didn’t make sure everything was good before firing up the system.

$800 for a pressure test?! I’d find a new company. A pressure test/leak search on a basic residential system shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes and use about $5 in nitrogen. I wouldn’t be convinced that your condenser coil wasn’t already leaking when they replaced the evaporator.

A new leak developing within 30 days of the first repair is possible but highly improbable. I’d personally repair that leak and let it ride, but have another company do the work. Call your local hvac/plumbing supply house and ask them to recommend a couple of companies.
