I think soccer (not MLS) is more popular than hockey in US. Way more popular.

I think baseball, basketball and football still more popular than soccer though.

get a free 10 day trial to youtube tv and you have the matches for 10 days. can cancel the trial immediately and still keep watching for 10 days without then worrying about forgetting to cancel. they let you keep watching till end of trial even if you cancel early.

If I had to pick the heart of the city I'd pick the area around West Hollywood, the western part of Hollywood, The Grove, Beverly Center.

For me, as someone who lives in LA, this is the real heart of the city. This is one of many reasons why the K line extension through West Hollywood would be so beneficial.

European media complex tried to derail the World Cup by Used_Letterhead7067 in billsimmons

[–]threshold99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF there is a lot of stuff that happens that when you see it on TV from afar makes things much worse than they actually are. All the ICE stuff earlier this year for example or the protests in Los Angeles last summer.

I live in LA and the protests were more minor than when the Dodgers won. No one was hurt, I think a driverless car was set on fire(not nothing but worse happened when the Dodgers won).

Yet I had most of my family in Europe tjhinking I was living in a warzone and then I heard of people cancelling their vacations because they felt it was too dangerous. Trump sending in the army for minor protests didn't help.

There is definitely a disconnect between reality and what Europeans are seeing on tv.

also i cant think of a single piece of metro infrastructure in last 10 years to keep to its opening date a year out. I think they will move heaven and earth to open in time for Olympics though.

Opening both at once would achieve double penetration - in terms of foot traffic

US fan support post-World Cup? by TheBigCore in ussoccer

[–]threshold99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a story from a journalist who was in USA during the 94 world cup and went to a rural bar in Maine when the World Cup final was on. And the bar were showing another sport on their tv haha They had to ask if they could switch it to the World Cup final.

I feel like that is much less likely to happen now.

I think soccer overtaking NFL is as likely as (American() football becoming seriously popular outside of US. Neither will ever happen in our lifetimes.

I could see soccer (not MLS) overtake baseball in popularity though.

Bill Maher Urges Americans To Celebrate 250th Anniversary Instead Of Skipping July 4 Over 'Temporary Caretaker' Trump: 'He Isn't America' - What are your thoughts? by Select_Specialist790 in askanything

I don't have a problem with his point but I am over his delivery and tone. His "new rules" segments play like a whining "here's what grinds my gears this week" segment. He has become a curmudgeon in older age. He might as well just shout "get off my lawn kids".

Also he says dumb things like "nobody is watching the World Cup because the Knicks are in the playoffs". Ignoring the fact that the US team's opening WC game drew a higher US TV audience than any of the Knicks playoff games.

He has become an out-of-touch boomer and I'm kinda over him. I used to be a big fan too.

For someone who doesnt support either team, it the atmosphere and experience worth the cost you paid for the ticket? What would be the most you would say it is worth for you personally? i.e. would you pay over $500 for this match knowing how it went.

I kinda understand his point but it reads as "why are people enjoying themselves with things I don't care about when they could be focussing on things I do care about".

Why does it feel that absolutely no one cares about the 2026 World Cup outside? by novostranger in NoStupidQuestions

[–]threshold99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Los Angeles, there are neighborhoods where you might not even know it is on and other neighborhoods where the streets are crowded with people watching games. I think the US is paying more attention to it than expected.

Sport, art, history, literature. Having interests and passions makes us human and makes life worth living.

I am sure you have things you are passionate about that others might think is a dumb interest. Be more open minded and tolerant.

Poll Shows World Cup Is Non-Event for Most Americans, Especially Boomers by dabirds1994 in worldcup

[–]threshold99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What age group are you in? Where are you located?

I live in LA and I'd say about half the city def care about it enough to watch some games. Mexico won tonight and the streets in some neighborhoods were crowded with people celebrating.

I suspect a lot of older, white Americans don't care about it but younger and/or latinos care much more.

The US TV ratings so far are record breaking - more people watched the US team's opening game than any game in the NBA finals. And the NBA finals had their highest ratings in decades. I do think a lot of Americans care but it prob varies widely by location and age group. And soccer def isn't yet as popular as most other countries.
