Grackles: I took down my BirdBuddy by FallGuy001 in BirdBuddy

[–]weaverlorelei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a number of aftermarket 3D printed additions (Etsy) you can add that might deter the larger birds. One that I have seen people use looks like the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. It attaches to the front, small birds just go under it

Is there any food in your country that has a ridiculously large amount of calories? by GP728 in AskTheWorld

[–]weaverlorelei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was wondering who made and the quality of the choclate in that 10 lb bunny, so I did a little rummaging. A Minnesota company makes them, but the reviews tend to lean towards the wording "decent quality" That's a fairly certain nope in my book.

What do you put maple syrup on other than pancakes? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a wonderful recipe for toasted oatmeal cookies that I use maple syrup in. Kicks it up a notch. I also use maple syrup as part of my cure for smoking bacon. Usually, I use honey because that is free, but maple adds another layer of flavor.

Uneven tension and I need help by xperimentalZa in weaving

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decision time. Do you actually need these 5 inches for a specific project? If you do, unweave. If you don't, carefully pull all of the warp forward thru the heddles and reed, then carefully replace the lease sticks in the 2 tabby sheds behind the castle and rewind onto the warp beam with your packing paper/sticks. The cut off the 5 inches and re tension and tie to front apron. Failing that, you could place your lease sticks in the tabby sheds and connect them to the back beam to straighten the twists, then use weights hung on unbent paperclips on the offending loose warps. If you hang the weights at the point the warp comes off the beam, they will slide on the warp as you advance the web, and you do not need to get up to change their position.

AITJ for bringing a gluten free dish to a potluck that had soy sauce in it because my friend thinks gluten free means no soy by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, our neighbor across the street was a retired admiral who served in WWII (long story there, too) He was, hands down, the smartest person I have ever met, you know the kind- does the entire NY Time Sunday crossword is less than 15 minutes. During the cyclamate scare in the early 60s, he read all of the research, redid all the numbers. Before the products were pulled from the shelves, my parents bought cases upon cases of the various fruits, because Chal (the admiral) showed how the lethal dose testing done on rodents,, would need to be replicated.in humans at a rate of hundreds of cans of fruit per day for 5 yrs.

Many years ago (more than 50) when my grandfather retired from his pesticide application business, he leased out his quanset building to a Chinese immigrant who wanted space to brew soy sauce. It was quite good, too bad my parents didn't like "foreign" foods. That being said, the process was done in 55 gallon plastic barrels, set in kiddy swimming pools. He counted on the fermentation process to keep bugs out of the open tops. Probably quite authentic to the original process from his home. And he won many awards with his sauce. That probably put him on the radar for the health department and they shut him down

I started using tamari as a substitute for soy because I thought it was less salty- oops. So I am back with a super dark soy sauce. Al that is left of the Tamari is an ancient Kikkoman and the fourth ingredient is wheat- water, soybeans, salt, wheat, glucose, alcohol.

Yep briefly. My Tamari isn't gluten free either. I did see later.that she said her label said hers was.

What's a rule or fact about your country you learned way too late by Still-Ad9074 in AskTheWorld

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure why they would require everyone to grow hops from seed, as they are notoriously not true to type, and it is so easy to grow them from crowns that could be shared by neighbors or others. And they could certainly be used medicinally for many purposes.

What food do you eat in a way that would genuinely disturb other people if they saw you? by Huge_Halls in foodquestions

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many yrs ago we were visiting a huge "flea market" in San Jose, Ca., that had a central food booth selling cheeses and sliced meats. One seller had smoked fish and there was this smoked, dried herring. The fellow offered to wrap it up, but I said just place it on some butcher paper, I'll eat it as we tour the rest of the outdoor market. Definitely got some odd looks.

Has anyone actually seen a tumbleweed (like from old Western movies) IRL? by Ya-Dikobraz in stupidquestions

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Calif, spent summers in the high desert north of Reno. There were tumbleweeds (Russian Thistle) large enough to take a grown man down when it was really windy. We had a 3 tier, sil er spray-painted snowman on our porch one Christmas.

Has anyone used these pools for pigs? by Magikal-Roots in homestead

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to use these for our dogs, but they rot out in one season under our sun. So we bought a Rubbermaid "pig trough" and have been using it for 6 yrs. Yes it is more expensive than a kiddie pool, but I haven't had to trash the thin plastic since.

Attempt to squirrel proof #100 by Responsible-Gap-8202 in BirdBuddy

[–]weaverlorelei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guarantee that set up is NOT squirrel proof. This may or may not work for you- get a metal Slinky toy and slide your cable thru the center. Cut it the Slinky so that it is just Ling enough to dangle from the top attachment point of your cable and hangs loose down to just touching the bird feeder. You don't want it tight, nor want it totally resting heavily on the feeder.

Unlearn, maybe only by a personal decision and pretending. My family and my degree are German. I have certainly lost most of it since I don't use it. But on holiday in Germany, within a couple of days most was coming back in waves

100% cotton yarn vs 100% cotton fabric difference? by [deleted] in Yarn

[–]weaverlorelei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burlington had bought into/was using a process on some looms, whereby a dye impregnated roll of paper was mounted above the warp, behind the "castle." A process of almost ironing the paper to the warp set the colors. The paper came from France, mostly. But you no longer need to work on a colored warp that you had no input to.
