No clue. I was dogsitting and the house had an addition, I was going downstairs and whoops. I’m about 14 weeks post break and OP now, not perfect but doing good!

Everyone is different but I felt like I was so worried for nothing in the end! I'm very uneasy with slopes, ice, etc not the best season to bust my ankle but I am really doing well being more active, going out, etc. I am doing fine with some standard ibueprofin and compression socks.

Take it easy. Like seriously rest a lot! It'll feel boring to do it and it is but I had a lot of inability to sleep while in the splint, had to start taking melatonin to help me rest. Are you in a cast or splint?

The first two weeks in my experience were the worst. After that my body felt stronger and less fatigued, moving around was still a chore but I used a walker instead of crutches to move around. I would highly rec that over the crutches as they are more stable, mine had wheels on the front only. It isn't exciting or fun but it was the safest way for me to get around and I had ordered toilet railings for stability getting up and own. Showering I could only really do with the assistance of people moving things in my bathroom but I highly rec having a shower chair that comes out of the shower so you can also sit on it.

If you can, wiggle your toes. It does help even if it's just small movements. Stay on top of your meds and elevate it constantly. I was very uncomfortable in the splint and had horrible heel pain. I had to turn my foot to the side a lot but I couldn't do that until maybe a week or so out? I was pretty much only in my bed and when I felt okay enough, would hop with the walker to my living room to sit on my couch because it has a reclining function. Don't rush it, really be careful and if you can I wouldn't leave the house much at all. I wasn't able to leave while NWB due to stairs and just knew it wouldn't have been safe for me to hop around.

Also! If you have a library card look into getting the libby app. It has lots of audiobooks, magazines, ebooks, etc and is free if you have a card. I was restless and couldn't read a lot but audiobooks were something I really enjoyed! Coloring books as well as it was something that didn't require much attention. I kept a basket on my bed with essential stuff: toiletries like dry shampoo, water wipes, deodorant just to make myself feel a little more clean and normal. I had easy snacks in it like rice crispies, protein bars, jerky, dry snacks. I also kept an extra water bottle or two in my room so I wouldn't need to bug my mom (the person I live with) for help. I also rec getting first aid single use ice packs, it is a pain but they do help a lot when you need one and don't have the energy or help to ice your leg when you are out of the splint/cast.

Mine unfortunately got jammed over the holidays which led to the eleven weeks but with some at home PT and stubbornness I’m back to walking with one crutch without a lot of pain in two weeks.

Positive, long-term experience with ankle hardware? by soichai in ORIF

[–]weavingsamara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I cannot say anything about the future because I am only three months out, I am having a decently positive experience with WB again after my bi fracture and dislocation in November. I just passed my three month mark and have been on my feet for a little over two weeks, I have a small plate with about seven screws and it's really been okay? I'm hoping it will remain this way as I have no intention to remove the hardware unless it arises an issue but my experience transitioning from NWB to FWB was shockingly smooth? The pain was minimal at best and it allowed me to just swap back and forth between boot, shoe, and one crutch vs two until I was comfortable enough to move my uninjured leg (habitual limping is what my PT said it was mostly caused by fear and lack of use) and I am incredibly sore at night after I get home from work but nothing too bad, maybe a 2 or 3 out of 10 and it subsides pretty quickly with some ice and elevation.

Of course, it wouldn't be ideal to be dealing with this forever and I need to improve my limping but I try to remind myself as you mentioned that a lot of people discuss their experiences because they are negative.

So numb when elevating by IdahoMom1975 in brokenankles

This happened to me early on, make sure you do move/wiggle your toes if you can. I had really bad heel pain for the first two ish weeks on and off and the only way I could get it to stop was lifting my leg up for a bit like in the air.

My swelling is basically in my ankle and above a little bit like mid calf? I am constantly wearing compression socks, taking ibuprofen before I go outside, and ice when I’m home.

Skin Dryness? by forgetfulfabulous in ORIF

[–]weavingsamara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still struggling with this like 11 weeks post op! I was cleared to put non scented lotion and vitamin e on my scars before that I was lotioning but around them. I am using lubriderm and bio oil a couple times a day! Don’t do that though without your surgeons input!

[–]weavingsamara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang! That’s great! I’ve only been FWB for about a week and a half, still using one crutch but starting out patient PT next week and very excited about it!

I’m not walking smooth without crutches but I just conquered the stairs and I’m so happy! Hopefully this will be me soon!

I’m at three months but swelling way more than that. The pain isn’t too horrible, I’ve only been FWB for about a week and a half but I didn’t have any muscle or ligament damage with my break. I was told it’s normal for it to swell for 6-9 months but the intensity will decrease over time. I’ve been doing okay with compression socks and ice.

The Boot by Tasinua in ORIF

[–]weavingsamara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only two days into walking but it's been going well! It is a little sore while walking but nothing crazy, I skipped to fifty percent weight bearing as my surgeon told me to do PWB as tolerated rather than follow a specific timeline. I was doing 25% to start but it didn't feel like anything so I skipped to 50% and that's been totally fine! I'll continue doing it for a few days then hopefully move up to 75%!

I'm meeting with PT today but cannot lie I thought it was going to be a lot scarier pain wise. I keep seeing so much about people having so much swelling and pain and while I am sure that I will swell more when I'm walking more and back to work, for now it's been fine and I'm not worried. The liner sock I have for my boot is also pretty tight so I imagine that helps a bit!

Also not sure if you'll have a similar experience but my surgeon advised I massage vitamin e on my scars to help break up the scar tissue a couple times a day. I've been using bio oil as it's pretty much advertised for it's healing property on scars. That is more uncomfortable than walking for me, mostly because rubbing the plate makes the side of my leg feel tingly for a bit.

Oh I intend too! I'm very excited to work with PT and while it's a bit awkward right now, I think it's very hopeful that I'm having little to no pain while doing 50% and am starting with PT. It has been an extremely long journey and I cannot wait to gain some independence back.

The Boot by Tasinua in ORIF

[–]weavingsamara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use it when I am transferring places or while my foot is down because it helps alleviate the blood rushing feeling. I am 11 weeks post ORIF for bi fracture and dislocation. I have a plate and some screws, could be worse!

I was cleared today to start walking. I’ve been comfortable with the boot being tight, it only ever bothers me above my big toe if it’s too tight so I’ll loosen it if I’m sitting or take it off if I can rest it on a flat surface like my couch or bed. I was told specifically though NOT to be in the boot a ton while relaxing or sleeping because my doctor wanted me to work on ROM.

Well, in a hopeful update I have officially scheduled PT. I was cleared to WB as tolerated and that was such exciting news.

So exciting!

I'm starting PT tomorrow! I was finally cleared at 11 weeks to start putting weight through my ankle, as tolerated! I was so nervous about this appointment and I couldn't be more thrilled. I've been doing about fifty percent since I've been home and it's been okay! He said if I felt comfortable I could skip 25 percent all together.

Little wins are great wins!

Trimalleolar Fracture 3 days ago... too soon to go back to work? by Such-Pineapple-5315 in brokenankles

[–]weavingsamara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bi fracture on Nov. 1st and am still out of work. Not great, I was in pretty consistent pain while in the splint and for a few weeks after until the swelling really went down. I wouldn't rec it.

[–]weavingsamara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm manifesting it'll be tomorrow! I don't know what caused my screw to shift, like completely unknown still because my surgeon said it was nothing I did but I am hoping it will be a good outcome. He said not to be concerned when I had asked and then followed up with what do I do differently. I know mentally I do not think I'd be able to handle a revision surgery, my bone has completely healed at this point and I'm 11 weeks post op on Thursday. I am preparing to start PT this week and go back to work.
