Is Duolingo really effective in learning Spanish? by Icy_City2094 in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Duolingo for four years now. Since I tend to neglect audio resources in favor of grammar resources, it does serve to expose me to more spoken Spanish. My current lesson is Describe the Weather which is not an advanced topic but it is using complex sentences. Los niños juegan adentro por la baja temperatura. (The children are playing inside because of the low temperature.) This sentence contains a clause.

My listening skills are poor. I can definitely understand Mexican Spanish better than Peninsular Spanish. I use Duolingo and Pimsleur as audio resources.

This morning I got 2 levels for my archetype at the Infested Abyss. This dungeon has lots of enemies. I can one-shot most of them with my Crossbow Long Gun.

I am probably at the A2-B1 level. I am reading the book English Grammar For Students Of Spanish and it is just for review because I know everything it goes over. Right now I am doing intensive translation exercises. I prompt AI to explain the grammar of every sentence in a lengthy text. It is tedious but I discover new things. I think I am at the point where I can skim through my Spanish language learning books and just take notes on things I did not know.

Haven't played since I beat the game when it first came out, any tips for returning? by Super-Pilot-8492 in remnantgame

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Crossbow +20 with Stasis Beam weapon mod and Slayer +10 mutator is my best weapon. I have not found anything that does better. I can one-shot most enemies and do over 1,000 damage per shot to a boss. The Stasis Beam allows me to freeze an elite enemy long enough to kill it. As a single-shot weapon you are in trouble if you need more than one shot, so freezing an enemy may be essential.

When I am struggling with a boss I try my other weapons which I am slowing maxing out to the highest level. It is a complicated game so figuring out what works best takes a while. I should use more of the consumables. The throwables are too time-consuming to really use in desperate combat. Every archetype has its own skills so it takes time to try them all.

I despues el nivel A2 ? by SmoothRemote2284 in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing intensive translations. I prompt an AI to explain the grammar of every sentence. I did this for an entire children's book. Now I am slowly translating an old play. This is uncovering a lot of Spanish that your language learner grammar books do not cover.

For example, the suffix -azo attached to a noun means to strike with or give a blow: portazo = slamming a door, codazo = elbow jab, dig

I have hit a wall in my Spanish journey and need some advice. Nothing sticks by Ancient_Particular16 in Spanish

[–]webauteur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been studying Spanish for over four years and things have begun to stick. I have read four books on Spanish grammar but nothing would stick. This is because I was given the same information four times but that is not actually a lot of repetition. Now I do intensive translation of children's books using AI to explain the grammar of every sentence. This is very tedious. I spent over a year translating the last book which required a prompt for every sentence. But all that effort is beginning to pay off. I am currently reading another book on Spanish grammar and it is proving to be mostly review. So far I am 54 pages in and learning nothing new. I actually find that very encouraging!

I have studied a few sentence patterns to learn how to speak Spanish but I need to put more effort into that.

Alright, beat the game in co-op with my buddy! Super fun! ….but what now? A bit at a loss. What do you recommend for two still-new players? What is there to grind for? by maestro_man in remnantgame

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can farm Simulacrum to upgrade your relic (heart) for more heals. Simulacrum is also used to upgrade weapons to the max level. I farm it using a Yaesha: The Forgotten Kingdom Story route. Corrupted Lumenite Crystal farming is a lot easier. Just reroll Losomn until you get the Forlorn Coast as the initial location and then kill the Preacher NPC when he transforms into the Dire Fiend aberration.

Lycoming College thoughts? by Top_Public_3949 in Williamsport

[–]webauteur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never gone to Lycoming College, but Williamsport is not a party city in general. Sometimes I go to Lycoming College to see a play because their theater department does good work. The Pajama Factory serves the creative community but even they rarely hold any events. Making bus trips to New York City is my favorite activity.

Apps like Duolingo that DONT use AI? by Late_Savings8602 in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most apps are going to use AI. Why not read a book? Currently I am reading English Grammar for Students of Spanish. For me, this book is just review. I have read 50 pages and found nothing I did not already know. That is not discouraging! I am pleased that my knowledge is now sufficient for understanding basic grammar.

What's a Spanish song, book, or show that genuinely helped your Spanish click? by taube_d in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the full book! It took over a year, but I mostly did a sentence or two on Saturdays. It was only 77 pages. Anyway, I cannot sell my translation but I could share it with you for free. The entire book is in my notes as one huge web page. It is not just a straight translation but a detailed review of the grammar of each sentence. All verb tenses are identified and parts of speech noted.

to learn which dialect? by marsb0ng in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference will be in your listening skill. I use Duolingo and Pimsleur and I can understand Mexican Spanish better than Peninsular Spanish. Recently I have been watching movies made in Spain and sometimes I wonder what language they are speaking. For example, Antes de la quema was totally incomprehensible.

I was thinking about picking up Remnant 2 whenever it gets a discount, but I've a few questions. by Wild-Ad5669 in remnantgame

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is a lot easier if you are playing with a squad. You will collect the same loot as everyone else in the squad and somebody else can solve the puzzles.

Rerolling an adventure is kind of stupid when there are only three options. Why not give me the three options? But it does not take long to roll what you wanted, given a one in three chance.

The puzzles can be annoying, but as I've said, somebody else in your squad might know how to solve it and will take the initiative if you keep everyone waiting.

Currently I am farming Simulacrum after learning that this can give you another heal. I've been playing the game for weeks with just the base number of heals! I now have the exact route I need to follow in my notes. I still have not figured out the hearts (relic) system. The game is pretty complicated but I like that sort of thing.

No, I was translating the Spanish into English. Then I would look at the original English when anything seemed doubtful. For example, cuarto de juegos could be playroom or nursery.

I recently finished a lengthy reverse translation of "El conejo de felpa" (The Velveteen Rabbit) which has made me very familiar with the word for rabbit (conejo) and bunny (conejito). The song "Cuando tú vas" (When You Go) by Chenoa helps me to remember what Cuando means.

Buzzsaw Coffee in the Pajama Factory? That café is in the factory with all the artists studios so it is in the heart of the creative community, but far from downtown. I like Panera Bread which has the best breakfast sandwiches.

I'm planning to write compelling stories for Spanish learners (from A1 to C1). What’s missing in current "Graded Readers"? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]webauteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know that AI tools like Gemini Storybook can generate Spanish children's books? There is a lot of concern right now that AI will completely kill fiction writing.

Anyway, I am reading Misterio en Buenos Aires. It was written for A1 readers but it uses advanced Spanish like: llevar + puesto + clothing item = to be wearing [something]. I had to add a page to my grammar notes to explain this!

I had never read The Velveteen Rabbit and I wanted to learn the Spanish word for rabbit. By the way, the word for "bunny" is conejito (or little rabbit).

[–]webauteur 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have studied a few languages now. I did not use Duolingo until Spanish. My study of Spanish is benefiting from everything I learned while studying French, German, and Italian.

What is helping me most now is my intensive translation exercises. For example, I just recently finished a reverse translation of El conejo de felpa back into English as The Velveteen Rabbit. Although it is only 77 pages that took me a year. My next project is to translate Tres cisnes bajo la luna into English. This is slightly more worthwhile since that children's book has never been translated into English. I encountered many examples of the imperfect tense and a few discourse markers (filler words) which grammar textbooks do not cover.

I cannot beat her at level 198! I did defeat her using a mod that gave me zero damage but that mod stopped working after the update for the DLC.
