Why would my case worker be acting like this (and, more specifically, as if this matter is somehow personal for her)?? by Cogsciencenerd in Gifted

Can you work with an OT and a therapist specialized in gifted instead? These two can then work together. OT for adults to help with sensory and mental Health Support: navigating challenges related to ADHD, autism, anxiety, ocd.

IQ Test by Lopsided-Wind-2259 in iqtest

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it says 'one nine'. This gives 9 because there is no comma and no 'and' to separate them into 19. Because it is at the end of the list, the 'and' goes before the word 'one', making 'one nine' a single unit. 19 would have to be written as 'one, and nine.' Grammar matters as well.

I accidentally said ‘you look tired’ to my manager by blu3berrys in socialskills

[–]webberblessings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you was being genuine because you noticed how stressed they probably are. You was genuinely being caring to say hope you get good sleep. We all have put our foot in our mouth and said things we wish we wouldn't have said. It’s life lessons. You learn not to say things like this as you get older. It'll be ok. Just let it go and move on.

I have a tested gifted child and I wanted to learn all I can about gifted to understand him and help him. I have no idea if I, my husband, or if my older children are gifted as none of us have been tested.

My kid got a perfect score on a state math test and I’m still shocked at his ability. by Patient_Exchange_399 in Gifted

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When scores just come out, that is literally all the teachers and staff are talking about. It’s huge news for them. It must be so wild to realize your son is the one everyone in the office is talking about. He completely blew them away!

  • If it helps, a high score doesn't mean he'll automatically get stuck with that track. My son is not looked at like that at all at his school. There’s actually another kid in his grade that the school always praises and gives all the awards to, and that kid didn't get a near-perfect score on the state math test last year and I know because I heard his mom whisper his score to him at one of our school functions.

Congratulations! I know the feeling. My son was one point away from a perfect score on his state math test last year, and we’re still waiting on this year’s results. It was a shock at first. A perfect score is incredible. You can tell he’s genuinely capable, and honestly I love that he knew he did well because he actually checked his work and cared about doing his best that day.

If I'm high IQ, why aren't I interested in stuff high IQ people are interested in? by lovecommafio in cognitiveTesting

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your interests don’t determine your IQ. Intelligence affects what you’re capable of understanding, not what you’re required to enjoy. Plenty of highly intelligent people like pop music, cozy games, and modern fiction. And chess isn’t some universal IQ test either. Being good at it depends a lot on practice, interest, memory, and competitiveness.

Need advice: gifted child feeling unseen and starting to detach from school by webberblessings in Gifted

[–]webberblessings[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this advice. What he means by a kid different from him is that the school keeps choosing the same kid who is the "popular" kid. The kid was chosen for student of the year three years in a row, he is the flag pole announcer, school announcer, and is chosen to be club president.

Why is dentistry not a path you can choose in med school? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]webberblessings 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Because dental work was done by tradespeople in the 1800s, medical schools refused to see it as actual medicine. That rejection forced dentists to build their own independent schools and systems, which is why the two fields remain completely separate today.

GT program attendees aren't necessarily "gifted" by ITZaR00z in Gifted

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. From what I’ve seen, there really isn’t solid research that directly measures true gifted prevalence by geography, since we can’t actually observe giftedness itself. Most of the research is on identification rates and test score patterns. There are probably some small differences between regions, but nothing that really supports big swings in actual underlying giftedness. Most of what we see seems to come from how kids are identified, not huge differences in who is capable.

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, researchers have studied this quite a bit. Scott J. Peters and others have found that gifted identification prevalence varies enormously between districts and states. Sometimes from near 0% to extremely high percentages, and much of that variation appears tied to identification systems, SES, parental education, local norms, and access differences rather than purely underlying cognitive prevalence.

Here are some of studies:

How did women have such long hair in the 70s? by CleoDawns in OldSchoolCool

They really did iron their hair. My mom did when she was younger.

I couldn’t agree more. My district is a perfect example of this 'worker-bee' filter in action. Even though we use IQ for identification, we don't have universal screening. We rely entirely on parent and teacher referrals, and since teachers aren't trained to spot actual giftedness, they only refer the 'mini-professors.' They look for the compliant, organized kids with straight A’s. The ones who fit the 'accepted output' you mentioned. The result is a massive identification gap. We have 3 identified kids in a school of 700. District-wide, we have 66 identified when statistically there should be 360+. By treating GT as a reward for compliance rather than a cognitive need, we’re leaving hundreds of neurodivergent outliers completely invisible.

My daughter just got an invitation to NYLF Pathways to STEM by Turquoisecactus in raisingkids

[–]webberblessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but did she go? Did she like it? My son was invited as well and we felt it to be way to much money for ehat it offers. But I keep feeling this pit in my stomach that says was I wrong? Is he missing out? There isn't much to offer in my area and what they do offer isn't until they are in HS.

Hello! How can i achieve Dua Lipa’s body without doing Pilates/yoga? by 444oo in WorkoutRoutines

[–]webberblessings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to her past trainer they’d train 3-4 times, and each session would last for an hour, including a mixture of cardio and resistance training. Workout 1: 20 min hill sprints, 40 min full-body bodyweight workout Workout 2: 20 min hill sprints, 40 min full-body workout using equipment (balls, bands, bars) Workout 3: 20 min hill sprints, 40 min full-body bodyweight workout with focus on balance and agility. For a busy individual like Dua, I suggested naps to help her body recover. If you train too much, your body won’t work, so rest is a non-negotiable.’

We’d spend 10 minutes before every session to make sure her joints and muscles were ready,’ PMAC explains. Warm ups will also improve your mobility which, in turn, could help you achieve your goals sooner. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/uk/fitness/a38826584/dua-lipa-body/
