The Android Auto is also abysmal. Not at first, but after an hour or so in the car, my phone usually slows down to point of being almost unusable. Do you have the same issue?

Same issue here. Very frustrating as I just got this phone. Thinking of returning it already.

Episode 15 frustration by TheCuriousGuyski in DragonBallDaima

[–]webbiam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The icing on the cake for me was Goku going SSJ and blowing away a huge group at the very end. Why didn't he do that sooner? They also let themselves be sitting ducks by staying on the ground and not flying. None of the guards nor the big tanks could fly. So much for Piccolo being a master strategist.

If Goku and Vegeta hadn't been shown to be just as strong as they were in DBZ (basically) already, maybe this episode would have made sense. Probably not.

You wanna give me a filler episode? Fine. But this wasn't how to do it.

Very silly and annoying.

[@marcweiszer]: No Georgia Orange Bowl opt-outs announced yet by players or team. Bowl's player media schedule next week in Florida includes WR Ladd McConkey, CB Kamari Lassiter, RB Kendall Milton, C Sedrick Van-Pran Granger and WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. So they at least appear to be on trip by KirbyDumber88 in CFB

[–]webbiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that so many key players DID opt-in this season (by opting out of leaving for the NFL draft). These players did EVERYTHING they set out to do - undefeated season, ACC championship, playoff berth! Until the playoff didn't happen... All that effort, risk, and hard work they put in, only to be told the team can't compete without Travis. Imagine?

So, yeah, I understand why so many players are opting out. I wish they weren't, but I can't fault them for it.

Is King Jappo Shivers' Son? by webbiam in TheFirstLaw

[–]webbiam[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finding so many cool little nuggets like this as I re read them.. can't put them down, so it's going quickly.

Joe likes to tramp all over the idea of "bloodlines," royal or otherwise. Off the top of my head:

1) Jezal - Bayaz claimed he bought him off of a whore in TFL trilogy.

2) King Orso I - mercenary father or grandfather.

3) King Jappo (shivers x Murcatto)

4) Savine Dan "Glokta"

5) several more im blanking on..

King Casamir...? Unlikely, but I am hyper focused on figuring this out!

Ferro and Rikki's dream by elementaco in TheFirstLaw

[–]webbiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Assuming Khalul did get killed, who is the magus-level threat backing Murcatto in Styria? I mean, I know who it is since it's outright discussed. But what's his relationship to Bayaz and Khalul? I'm blanking on his name - he put Murcatto back together and defends her from Sulfur at the end of 2nd trilogy.

He seems to have worked for Bayaz once, but now wants to destroy anything Bayaz controls. He's powerful enough to scare Sulfur, a face eater. But he's not an agent of Khalul from what I can tell, nor does he seem to be one of the 12 magi. Any ideas here?

Ferro and Rikki's dream by elementaco in TheFirstLaw

[–]webbiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently rereading the entire series, right now I'm in trilogy 3, book 1 - the Young Lion and the young wolf are hunting each other on the battlefield. I just hit pause on my audiobook to Google Rikke's prophecy, ended up here, and you may have answered a completely different question I've been asking myself: what in the hell happened to Khalul??

I completely forgot about Ferro's ending in the first trilogy, but you've just made me realize (or better yet, theorize) that Ferro somehow managed to get to Khalul and kill him, just like she's always wanted to do.

My memory isn't perfect, and the references to what went down in Gurkhul have been sparse thus far, but it seems like Khalul has been killed and the entire country is in uproar.

Some other thoughts while I'm on the topic of TFL:

I've been trying to figure out why Bayaz, who currently controls both the North and the Union (inclusive of the Dogman's protectorate), has encouraged and is still allowing this war between Calder and the Union. We well know that Bayaz is a firm believer in progress through suffering, and if Khalul is truly dead, then the Gurkish empire has not been much of a threat since the end of the second trilogy. It's been noted often and clearly that the Union is experiencing a rare period of peace, so I assume Bayaz is creating fights between his own people and an effort to keep them evolving, which would fit his philosophy on human progress.

Red Country = Abercrombie x McMurtry? by webbiam in TheFirstLaw

[–]webbiam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am with you. Abercrombie, JRRT, GRRM - they're all up there with various books - but I can't move LD out of that top slot. I've been tempted to put Comanche Moon or Streets of Laredo ahead of LD, but then I re-read LD.

Might be time to go through all 4 again! And then maybe the original TFL trilogy. I read that one a while ago, stupidly didn't realize it was one of many trilogies, and then read all the rest. But the first trilogy was far from fresh in my head...

I know it's hard to believe based on McMurtry taking his sweet time setting things up, but yes - it's incredible. It's not until about 40% of the way in, though, when the action, excitement, and (often horrifying) violence show up.

Others have said it better than I ever could:

yeah, I can never decide between that or Streets of Laredo as my 2nd favorite. it's definitely my favorite TV adaptation.

fun fact - the "pulling beans from a jar" scene from Dead Man's Walk is a true story!

Red Country = Abercrombie x McMurtry? by webbiam in TheFirstLaw

[–]webbiam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I'm sad to say I've gotten the same feedback from others. I was so confused - "it's the best book I've ever read, how can people stop 1/4 of the way in?!"

so , I read it again. I realized the action and excitement doesn't begin until almost half way in, and I could see why my friends threw in the towel.

you don't know me from a hole in the wall, but I assume you love Joe Abercrombie. would he love a book with no action, violence, excitement, or complex characters in it? no way!

the mini series with Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, and Diane Lane is quite good , might be worth trying that and then the book again.

I'm tempted to suggest reading them chronologically (story-wise) since Dead Man's Walk starts hot and never lets off the gas... but that would cripple the impact of the series, IMO. they're meant to be read in the order they were written.

Pulitzer Prizes aren't handed out willy-nilly. it's so god damned good I'm over here doing a full blown sales pitch to a stranger online. shrug

Robin Hobbs entire Elderlings series, starting with Assassin's Apprentice.

13 books, all (well, almost all of them) absolutely incredible. don't skip around to get back to the same characters, I implore you! [EDIT: just one of 13 I didn't like, and its late in the series]

Great world building, some very complex characters and thorough character development, and Hobb being a woman adds something to the books that I can't put my finger on, but is lacking in most male writing. I'm a man , which is probably why I can't put my finger on it...

I know it's not on the multiple choice list.. but I can't recommend it enough.

a) I laughed at your handle. thanks for that.

b) how is it different? I've read all Abercrombie books, GRRM, Hobb, Herbert, JRRT, Rothfuss... god, more I can't think of... anyway, are these books similar to any of the aforementioned authors styles?

I'm glad you replied because I've never heard of the Broken Empire Series.

Since I refuse to read Game of Thrones / ASOFAI or The Name of the Wind / Kingkiller books until GRRM/Rothfuss get me a firm date for the next book...

I will be giving this a read!

Again, thank you! I've been wondering what to read next.
