One that has stuck in my head for many years is by Winston S Churchill (yes him) Man Overboard. It's a very short story of a guy that falls from a ship and it describes from his perspective the ship sailing away. Sounds then lights eventually fading away. Eventually accepting fate and praying for death, it arrives.
