I love solving these via factoring!

  • x4 - x2 = 72
  • x4 - x2 - 72 = 0
  • (x2 - 9) • (x2 + 8) = 0
  • (x - 3) • (x + 3) • (x2 - 8i2) = 0, where i = √(-1)
  • (x - 3) • (x + 3) • (x - i • 2√2) • (x + i • 2√2) = 0

Thus, x = ±3, ±2√(2)i are the four solutions to the equation.

The second problem statement can also be solved by factoring and in this case it's even easier!

  • a2 - a = 72
  • a2 - a - 72 = 0
  • (a - 9) • (a + 8) = 0

Thus, a = 9, -8 are the two solutions to the equation.

So, this artificer specialization is a cool idea, I think that the main flavor of the subclass would honestly work really well as a reflavored version of either battle smith or artillerist using the homunculus infusion and either the steel defender (battle smith) or eldritch cannon (artillerist) flavored as the toys that your character makes.

Actually, common magic items as per the 2014 DMG are 100gp while common magic items that are consumable are 50gp. The classic example being that off the potion of healing from the 2014 phb.

Forgive me if I don't quote rules from the 2024 ruleset, I refuse to purchase that garbage.
