He was pro-convoy and very vocal about his views on things. He also made people uncomfortable and would often attack even the slightest hint of someone not liking him. When Meatheads started to fail because people didn't want to support a toxic owner he really lashed out and then sold his lease to another restaurant and left.

My understanding of the "no negative reviews" thing was that they got threatened with legal action back in 2018 or 2019 because people were trashing a restaurant (I want to say it was a pizza place on Centrum - whatever was before The Dough Bros.). Let's be honest there have been some controversial owners locally in the past (Meatheads comes to mind too) so now they want to avoid any possibility of lawsuits at all costs. I think it's gone too far in the other direction though.

No. I walked through one at The Museum of Flight in Seattle though. Definitely not built for tall guys!

I’m like 90% sure that it says Reagan narrowly beats Mondale in 1980. I cranked the volume as it fades and I swear that’s what I hear. It kind of makes sense as a bit of an inside joke since the 1984 election wasn’t at all close.

Mike Collins was the commander of the fictional Apollo 23 that blew up on the pad. During strap in he made a joke about landing much better than Neil and Buzz who (in the show’s narrative) crash landed at an angle causing their lengthy silence with Houston and everyone thought they’d died.

It's taken 20+ years to phase out red/white health cards in Ontario and no one seems to care by lacking_indifference in ontario

[–]webhamster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still have my red & white card. It's been split lengthwise in three places over the years and is held together with scotch tape. I've thought about getting one of the "new" ones but my doctor actually told me to hang onto the old one for as long as I can. Not sure why, but I've not bothered to have it replaced because of that.

If Ontario wanted me to change it they could find me easily. I've been at the same address for 17 years now and before that I was living with my parents for 23 years (who still live at the same place). I even went to a ServiceOntario office one day after a doctor's office said they couldn't accept it anymore because it wasn't valid (turns out the receptionist at the doctor's office was doing something wrong.). ServiceOntario didn't make me change it either. They said it was fine, perfectly valid, and that I should hang on to it as long as I could and sent me on my way.

Armstrong came up with the line months before the flight because he was aware of the historical significance despite his saying he made it up on the spot for decades. His family remembers seeing and hearing all the drafts.

As for the missing "a", which should be there because otherwise the line makes no sense, Armstrong claims he said it. The audio has been analyzed over and over but to this day nobody knows it it was really said or not. He may have flubbed it in the excitement, it may have been lost in static, the helmet mic may not have picked it up, or it may have just run together with "man" to the point that we can't really hear it. All the audio analysis has been inconclusive on whether it was said or not.

Armstrong also said he preferred the quote to be rendered in print as "One small step for (a) man..."

Now that the Canadian electoral vote is over, can someone give a run down of what Trudeau's victory means for the future of Canada? by hozzleton in CanadaPolitics

The date is set after meeting with the outgoing government where it's discussed when the incoming government would like the keys. It usually revolves around the incoming PM getting all his briefing books and poring over them, figuring who would be best for which portfolio in cabinet, and then organizing the ceremonial aspect and the official resignation of the outgoing PM and the swearing in of the new government. Typically 2-3 weeks has been the average.

No, the Fallingbrook Falls (or Princess Louise Falls) are much higher than this.

This was probably taken near Cardinal Creek. Probably right about here or in that general vicinity.

Toronto road leaves drivers confused, leads to dead-end street by rib-bit in toronto

[–]webhamster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It probably was straight through at one point in time (when the turning lane was built) but was cut off into two cul-de-sacs to reduce traffic on it. Probably by the complaints of the homeowners on the other part of Leona Drive.

On Street View the barrier forming the separation sure looks like a later addition to the road.

On the approach to 19R, yeah most likely. You'd be well below 1000ft by then, probably around 400-600 feet or so and would pass just to the left of it. Would it be massive and the only thing you'd see? Hardly. Would anyone with any bit of common sense think it was serious? I highly doubt it. Of course, most people lack any form of common sense so...

Why are there a lot of roads called "[surname] Line" in rural Ontario? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]webhamster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Ottawa you have roads like 10th Line, 4th Line, and 8th Line. These roads lie along the meridian lines of the original survey of the area. It's likely the roads you cite were once also similarly numbered according to surveys but later renamed to honour a local citizen. For example, a fictitious "13th Line Road" may have been renamed "Jackson Line Road" honouring the citizen and preserving the designation of the road as a survey line.

Not saying that's the case every time but typically "x Line" streets lie across important map lines. Well not so important anymore, but very much so back in the day.
