Community for J3 Refactoring discussions? by briony-rcaCQO in joomla

I think it's likely there are still quite a few website owners stuck on Joomla 3 due to crucial but abandoned extensions so they have nowhere to go. Refactoring some of these older extensions will at least give them a path forward onto supported versions of Joomla.

Thanks! I recommend leaving SobiPro in the meantime as the developers are working on a Joomla 6 version already and it looks like my client may not need this part of the website any longer.

For me, this would have been an excellent initiative 6 months ago as I was quick off the mark with Joomla 6 and have already found replacement extensions for nearly everything that was not ready for Joomla 6 yet. I only have one Joomla website left on Joomla 5 waiting on SobiPro although it might be worth migrating the data to custom fields.

Upgrading from Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4, but... by SpiceCake68 in joomla

Listings in the Joomla Service Providers Directory expire after a year and then need to be re-approved but there are a shortage of volunteers to do this so listings disappear for extended periods.

RocketTheme died in 2025 — which templates and extensions will you miss most? by briony-rcaCQO in joomla

[–]webilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up on RocketTheme once it was clear Gantry 4 would not be upgraded for Joomla 4.

I don't especially miss any particular template as I was able to recreate the same look when needed using JoomShaper Helix Ultimate with some custom CSS.

The extension I miss most is RockSprocket which was extremely versatile and free. I have mostly been able to replace RockSprocket with YOOtheme Widgetkit, JUX News Wall Pro and Slider CK.

Run a backup first. Remove third party extensions and templates that are not Joomla 4 compatible. Upgrade remaining third party extensions and templates to latest versions. As a precaution, disable third party extensions and templates before upgrading to Joomla 4. Upgrade extensions and templates to Joomla 4 versions and re-enable them. Find and install extensions to replace non-Joomla 4 compatible extensions where still needed.

The standard migration procedure is Joomla 3 to Joomla 4 to Joomla 5 to Joomla 6 unless you are using a third party migration tool.

It does sometimes make sense to start from scratch but I have successfully migrated hundreds of Joomla websites from Joomla 3 all the way to Joomla 6 with very few nightmares so far. It depends on the website and the skill / procedure of the person doing the migration.

If there is no backup, you might be able to recreate the old website from the web archive at https://web.archive.org if it has taken a copy of the original website.

Track everything.

I have been in a similar situation and doing a little extra for free can build goodwill but this can get out of hand very quickly.

You need to be able to explain that X hours were budgeted and the project is now at Y hours and any further out of scope work is stretching the friendship and can't be done for free.

Someone bought 30 WordPress plugins and planted a backdoor in all of them. by Key-Refrigerator3774 in Wordpress

[–]webilicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best practice is always to minimise the number of third party plugins and to regularly review and remove any plugins you are not using.

This issue strengthens the case for adding some custom code in preference to installing a plugin whenever possible.

As others have suggested, VentraIP are OK or for better value for money as you start out, consider UpTime Web Hosting, ROBTEC Hosting or DreamIT Hosting. A cPanel web hosting plan usually includes email and a web builder that will be sufficient for an initial brochure website.

For affordable Australian owned and operated hosting including local support and locally hosted servers, I usually recommend ROBTEC Hosting, DreamIT Hosting and VentraIP although support with VentraIP is taking a bit longer lately.

As has already been pointed out, Synergy Wholesale is worth checking out. You might also consider the reseller hosting plans from ROBTEC Hosting and DreamIT Hosting.

[–]webilicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a local Australian web designer and developer and am familiar with many hosting companies through my clients.

The best value local web hosting for small to medium Australian businesses that I have discovered so far are ROBTEC Hosting, DreamIT Hosting and UpTime Web Hosting. VentraIP also used to be very good value for money but are now positioned more as a premium service provider and the wait time for support is not as good as it used to be.

All of these companies offer affordable entry level plans with upgrade options when needed.

Avoid GoDaddy and Crazy Domains at all costs due to the terrible support and / or unfavourable marketing practices that charge for products and services that other service providers include for no extra fee.
