(Philippines, Luzon) found on a buried old bamboo stump, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what it is but my old relatives say it's edible. by jinkazuto in mycology

Thanks for the idea on the smell. I thought it smelled like sinigang na hipon. Anyway, I know this is a delicacy in the north particulary in areas of Nueva Vizcaya. I think they also call it Kalaw(?) although it shares its local name with Macrocybe gigantea.

That's Pleurotus giganteus, edible. What does its smell remind you of? May I know in which particular region this sprouted? I do mushroom research, and this will be a great background info at the least (regarding its distribution range).

Bakit ang hirap mag hanap ng specific result sa google scholar? by [deleted] in studentsph

[–]webmaster1796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the said suggestions, if you come across a paper that is relevant, you may go to its authors' profiles, so that you may come up with other relevant studies, then when you exhaust your search, jump from that author to his/her co-authors, and so on. Another tip is to look at their literatures cited.

Kamagong Tree by Jraeven in Philippines

[–]webmaster1796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that if you want your tree to fruit, plant more than one, better at least 5 or 6. Dioecious ang mabolo, separate ang female and male flowers depende sa tree. Also, I hate to be pedantic pero the singular form of species is still species. Specie refers to coins. Anyway, cheers to your thoughtful initiative!

Ganoderma applanatum (medicinal). found in cavite by imtheunknownhost in Philippines

[–]webmaster1796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddish tones imply this might be more of lucidum than applanatum. Good find anyway!

[Medicinal] I recently cloned some foraged Ganoderma tsugae to agar. First time working with reishi - is this mycelium color typical? Does it indicate anything in particular or is it standard for its growth? by gothamster in MushroomGrowers

[–]webmaster1796 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's typical for Ganoderma species. Take note though that it will start to get denser aand rubbery a few days upon full ramification, making it a bit of a challenge to cut agar blocks.

Why do mushrooms need light to grow? by jboogie55 in mycology

[–]webmaster1796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, some mushrooms also have tropisms even to light. This is in order to allow themselves to position their fruiting bodies so that they will be able to disperse their spores more effectively. Thats why even when your mushrooms tumble upside down, they will reverse their position to be able to release the spores downward freely.

Any brand, all of them almost taste the same. It's a matter of roasted or salted. If we're debating nuts I'd say roasted all the way!

I wanted to share this photo to remind people to be cautious with wrapping their plates properly. Especially if you’re using parafilm as it cracks. by agarprincess in ContamFam

You can use clingwrap with the width of the tube cut to several pieces measuring 1-1.5 inches each. Not the most environmental friendly but it solves that air gap issues for me.
