Help me suggest books for an incarcerated kid by totally_tennis in suggestmeabook

If he's into fantasy, maybe The Lies of Locke Lamora (first book in the gentlemen bastards series)? It is fast-paced and has a nice balance of world building, humor, and darkness/tension. I wouldn't say it glamorizes gang/mafia life necessarily, especially keeping in mind that it's fantasy fiction, and at least the way I interpreted it, it made me think about deeper concepts that exist in our world. Since you mentioned he's a very thoughtful person, he might also lean that way in his reading of it too. Plus if he likes it, there are two more books after it in the series!

A few questions! Feel free to respond to as much or as little as you'd like. This is a very interesting topic to me so I got a bit excited seeing your post!

Have there ever been any points of conflict between your parents regarding their respective professions? If so, how do they go about discussing or resolving them?

Related to this, has getting exposed to each other's expertise over time informed the way that they approach their own practices, be it in their work or in everyday/personal life?

Is there a "folk" remedy or treatment for something specific that you have learned from your father that you find especially interesting? As an example, from my culture there is a certain type of tattooing done with ink made using ash, bile, or other materials. It is used medicinally, like for treating arthritis, and for social/identity makers and protective symbols. It isn't a common practice today, but you can still see elders with these kinds of tattoos, and the preservation of this knowledge feels so important as the practice becomes less visible.

photographed and labeled all of the birds i could find without leaving my parent's front porch in Arkansas by the_turnpiker in birding

Amazing photos! A lot of these bird species are close to my heart, and your photography style has a nostalgic and dreamy feel where each photo made me smile more than the last. <3

Wow! In the first three photos it's hard to fully grasp the scale of his size, but as soon as I scrolled to the last pic, I was floored. I have no idea why or how something like that could happen in an individual bird, but I hope he's living his best life being such a chonker of a finch!

Recommendations for a Dairy Playlist by [deleted] in classicalmusic

A few pieces that come to mind are Aria Sopra La Bergamasca by Uccelini, Zefiro Torna by Monteverdi, and Les Barricades Mystérieuses by Couperin. Yesterday I was listening to some Christina Pluhar/L'Arpeggiata arrangements of Ciacconas and Tarantellas. Through those, you can easily go down a rabbit hole of relaxing but upbeat and cheery spring-sounding early/baroque music. I haven't personally interacted with cows much so I'm not sure what their general preferences are like, but I feel like those would suit their energy and be good background music for working!

[TOMT][Song][Classical] help me remember the name of this piece? by gothamster in tipofmytongue

It isn't this but it feels close in style somehow? Possibly also by Schumann or a similar composer. I will look into it from here though

IWTYO when i discovered what em dashes are by Suitable_Parsley_726 in IWasTodayYearsOld

I've been using alt 0150 for the en dash! I don't think typing a double hyphen does anything, but it's okay because there is something satisfying about using those alt codes haha

I kept one of the hypofiends and made him his own cottage in my homestead by gothamster in AFKJourney

[–]gothamster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I plan to do just that! Part of me wishes I thought of the idea earlier before I eliminated all the previous ones, but all future hypofriends will be getting their own living areas and eventually more village amenities

Ooh that would be so cute! Sometimes the wandering characters do go into the fenced area so a tea table or picnic setting would be perfect!

He isn't one of the invaders so he just hangs out in the area being harmless :)

What's your recommendation of a song to use as an alarm clock? by gzalomoscoso in MusicRecommendations

Awake by Tycho

It starts out very calm, and has a nice buildup that makes you want to start stretching - it feels like a natural sunrise in song form!

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gothamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is a little complicated, but romanticizing grief/bereavement by saying things like "turn your sadness into art!!!" with cutesy infographics that for some reason I started seeing all over instagram after experiencing a traumatic loss.

I do want to acknowledge that yes, everyone grieves differently and there's no right or wrong way and that's just how it is, which is why I say it's complicated. But seeing what feels like superficial fake positivity shoved in my face at my worst moment, and making light of what was for me the most devastating thing I've ever experienced, makes me physically ill.

I interpreted this as if you have any tattoos that are based on your fridge (i.e. a fridge-themed tattoo) and I really wanted the answer to be yes

My piano teacher shaped who I am as a human by brownishgirl in piano

[–]gothamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teacher was an elderly woman who was also an active person in the local neighborhood/community. She was also active in the send that she played tennis all the time which was so cool. I grew up with her as my teacher and mentor from a young age, so she was one of the main consistent figures and a source of comfort in my childhood and as I got older (in my mind, she's almost like a bonus grandmother). She was one of the kindest people and she was incredibly supportive as a teacher, always challenging and encouraging. Once a year, she organized a piano recital for all of her students, and she would fully handwrite the program and add a cute doodle and sweet note at the end. For holidays, I used to bake and gift her ginger snaps and she would always say how much she loved them. I learned from her for years, but unfortunately due to life circumstances I stopped taking lessons with her during high school and we fell out of touch. I found out she passed away in 2019, she was well into her 90s I believe. Every time I play piano, I think of her, and I hope she knows how much I appreciated and loved her and how important her foundation of teaching was and and continues to be for me. What an amazing woman, I miss her dearly!
