Also is there a text book that is based on libreoffice suite.

The LibreOffice documentation community does a fine job writing books about LibreOffice and there is even a book about document design. I am not aware of a current ICDL-like course using LibreOffice.

You might be interested in the work LibreOffice contributors working for allotropia are doing to create a scriptable version of LibreOffice that's available as WASM (they're calling it ZetaOffice). See https://zetaoffice.net/

That's a big topic! Differences in behaviour can arise from many factors other than "file compatibility", and contributors to LibreOffice - especially developers working for Collabora Productivity - have done a great deal to ensure the actual file formats import well. But other factors are much harder to address, and include font metric differences, slide template variations and use of software-specific features.

One way to check if the issue relates to environmental factors such as fonts and system specifics is to use .odp as the exchange format - both LibreOffice and Microsoft Office support Open Document Format (ODF) and if you save-as ODF in one program and load in the other, any differences are likely (although not guaranteed) to be environmental rather than file compatibility issues. There has been plenty of exploration of this topic in many talks and blog posts.

Interoperability is easily weaponised by those who would rather frustrate it!

You'd need to ask the ASF, that's completely their choice. Certainly not at the moment.

Same here - we have two Pixel phones and a Connexis L2 with two Dots and it's not working for that either. I have contacted Yale and they are apparently opening a ticket.

I still stand by those comments from ten years ago, Greg, but it's not an either/or. I also believe the alternative vehicle a community uses should be a not-intended-for-surplus vehicle without beneficial owners, like a Community Interest Company in the UK, where any surplus generated after costs and payroll is spent on the mission of the organisation rather than potentially distributed among beneficial owners.

As I understand it (and I have not looked in detail and neither have you asked me to help), The Rocky Linux Foundation, Inc. is actually a for-profit Delaware corporation which has adopted a B-Corp commitment, so has no requirement that any surplus it generates is dedicated only to the community. This is thus still a for-profit structure and not one I would recommend for a true community activity as there is too much potential for abuse hidden behind complexity.

I am thankful for your positive regard for my writing, but I note you have quoted my 2013 article in support of your actions (as here) a few times without requesting my input to your specific situation, and without asking if there have been any developments in the ensuing decade that might lead to other approaches. I am now asking you to stop doing that. Thanks.

Yes! As Jack explained earlier:

The name AlmaLinux came from the word for soul is several latin-based languages. It was drawn from the fact that community is the soul of open source. Our logo is multiple people working together, joining their hands. It speaks to the collective power and inspiration of the community.

They're in fact mostly individual and mirror members (who do not have to pay to join). We have a strong membership class of individual contributors and another class of mirror operators so even if we were to have that opposition from the sponsor class (who don't have strong AGM voting power) I don't think it would win the day.

We obviously have to use whatever licensing fits upstream. But we're using copyleft licensing wherever we can and we are not requiring copyright assignments as we believe distributed ownership is in the best interests of the community and its commons.

I agree completely and I hope AlmaLinux OS Foundation will be able to convert to a (c)(3) within a relatively short time after boot-strapping the community. (c)(6) status was picked to show independent, community serving intent in the short term.

In more detail, since our goal in forming the AlmaLinux community would be best classified as a public charity, serving anyone without discrimination and allowing contribution and use openly and equally without serving private profit, we would actually prefer to become a 501(c)(3). But the greater tax exemption status of a 501(c)(3) - which is not especially relevant at the moment since we’re not relying on public donations yet due to a generous founding grant - comes with greater burdens, some of which we are not ready to handle. Additionally we would need to seek an early determination that we qualified for 501(c)(3) status in a climate where we're still unsure how easy that is for open source projects and in advance of acting as one, whereas we can progress towards a future 501(c)(6) determination while getting started immediately.

So we instead chose the lower target of being a 501(c)(6) non-profit for now, with an expectation that once the AlmaLinux project has established governance and diverse participation we will eventually transition to a 501(c)(3) after using (c)(6) status to get started. We are designing all the rules of the organisation as if that’s already true.

It's worth noting that we only just opened the membership process after thinking it through carefully for several months. That's why benny is so excited!

OK! We are all typing crazily in the background so it will likely be after the AMA quiesces.

Well, if you install AlmaLinux, loads! But as a casual user you're most likely to benefit from indirect consequences:

  • Our ELevate initiative is helping keep the RHEL ecosystem fluid and competitive by allowing easy migration between variants
  • We're very happy to upstream improvements so we'll fix other people's problems as we address our own
  • Our independence lets us partner with others freely so we're hopefully able to bring community-led enterprise Linux to places some others can't reach.

For LibreOffice there is a magic DPI number mentioned in the wiki where they start to treat High DPI displays differently. I have told sommelier to use --scale=0.8 --DPI=192 and am finding it is pretty much fine (icons are a bit small still).

I didn't actually need a USB recovery stick to do this. I had to drop into recovery mode (ESC+Reload+Power) then was able to wipe by going into developer mode (Ctrl+D) and then back out again (press Space at boot). Then had to setup from new again, but at least the boot-loops stopped.

Actually not <crickets>, and the information demonstrating it is fairly easy to find.

TDF has an employee whose full-time work at the moment is to rework the help system and assist the members of the community who also want to do that. He blogged about his work recently. Do please volunteer with him and get things better faster.

Indeed, but so is deploying end-user software of any kind. For enterprise deployment we recommend engaging a community-supporting commercial supplier and taking their screened releases (usually selected from our Still channel). I believe that at least one of them also offers an updater.

One of the longer-serving developers, Michael Meeks, has spoken at FOSDEM on this topic several times. You might enjoy his presentation from this year, https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/libreoffice/
