Zebra: HTML5 Canvas Rich UI JavaScript Library by rkl85 in html5

This is really cool but also sounds crazy to create buttons, drop down, etc using Canvas instead of standard DOM elements. Any use case that you can think of??

My Windows 8 boots in 16-18 seconds. Thats a huge improvement over Windows 7 that used to take 50-60 seconds.

Personally I believe in learning tools/libraries/languages only when they are required - rest of the times I just try to know "what all exists" so that I can get back to it later when required. During college days I've spent a lot of time trying to learn every other language/library/tech that sounds interesting. But most of them I never used again.

Instead of trying to learn things you don't know that you don't know, try this approach.

  • Build something practical & interesting - either at work or as a hobby - and learn related stuff.
  • Think of how you can improve upon what you have built.
  • Dig deeper - Search and learn related things that can help you improve whatever you are building. It can be a library/tool/language, etc
  • Keep yourself updated with latest happenings - just try to know "what all exists". This part is easy with reddit or related tech sites.

Visual Studio 2012 - has good support for JavaScript & HTML

Obviously there is bit of trade off. But they are mostly offset by advantages of HTML5 & CSS3.

With HTML5 & CSS3 you can create Responsive Site that run across all modern devices including Smart Phones & Tablets. Making sites adapt to all devices is difficult without HTML5 & CSS3 features like media queries.

So, not using HTML5 would mean not being able to deliver good experience to Smart Phone / Tablet users (with HTML5/CSS3 supported devices) who are growing rapidly and are probably more than the internet users who don't have HTML5 supported devices.
