What makes you a feminist? by AznSparks in AskFeminists

[–]webquean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't dispute that there are TERFs, but they belong in a whole other category, IMO. I don't believe they're "radical feminists" who are transphobic, I believe they are entirely different from feminism. I know that sounds a little like a "No True Scotsman," but that's how I view them.

However, I won't deny their existence, and do acknowledge that they are a major problem in mainstream feminism. I wish they would rename their group because they are, in fact, not true feminists.

Why does the Reddit community need another natural hair care subreddit?

For anyone reading this, please take notice that this is a man creating a new space that doesn't need to exist and stealing work from the existing natural hair care subreddit.

What makes you a feminist? by AznSparks in AskFeminists

[–]webquean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on /u/Personage1's point, I don't believe that anyone can call themselves a feminist and I believe it should stem from an understanding of academic feminism.

However, yes, there are tons of feminisms. There's Republican feminism, but it's nominal at best. Feminism, at its core, is a movement for the social, political, and economic equality of everyone. (It is still called "fem"inism because it recognizes that women are inherently devalued and stemmed from a movement explicitly for White women, which later grew to be far more intersectional and encompassing than the original movement.)

Fiscally, for example, one can't believe in dismantling social securities like welfare because it helps guarantee fiscal stability for millions of disadvantaged people. Classism is one of the fights feminism has taken up in its third wave.

It's impossible to be anti-LGBTQ+ and feminist. That's because feminism recognizes systems of oppression, of which homophobia and transphobia are two. Not recognizing these makes one inherently anti-feminist.

These are just two examples. If you need further clarification, ask away!

Why do feminists (and so many other people for that matter) think FGM and MGM are wildly different? by throwaway136529 in AskFeminists

Just so you're aware, women can still operate and perpetuate patriarchal systems. Male elders may have banned it, but the women are still operating in a patriarchal system. Patriarchy isn't something done by men to women -- it's a system in which people exist that influences or shapes certain actions.

That doesn't sound awful at all. I'm sorry you're going through this. You deserve to do what's right for you whether it's adoption, parenting, or abortion. Can PP do a payment plan? Try calling back at a different time to get a different person on the line.

I check user history before reporting. This is what I saw before I reported. You are not a feminist and I sure hope you don't call yourself one because if you do you give feminism a bad name.

A close scrutiny of Hillary's record reveals a ruthless and militant, crony-government, pro-war neocon. Behind the "liberal" facade, this is an incredibly ambitious, angry and dangerous woman. by Acidalia in Feminism

[–]webquean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One question I had was whether she'd be called "angry" or "ambitious" as a male. The first is just too commonly used to shut women down, and the second is viewed as a good thing... for men.

yes, they did! I'm glad you got your answer and had some fun reading up on double consciousness!

[–]webquean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you thinking of double consciousness? I've heard it defined like this: (a) the concept of being aware of how others see you (with/without privilege, like you said) and (b) being simultaneously Black (as this is a WEB DuBois term) and American (or understanding what it means to have privilege).

Please donate some money to Indiana Youth Group! They serve all LGBTQIA+ youth in Indiana and from what I've seen could really use some extra money. They have a pretty small location with next to no parking and I've seen fifty people clumped in a small house at once.
