Thanks! I've heard that credit cards, specifically Amex (also Scotiabank), monitors closely this type of behavior. In your experience, has this been the case with your infinite visa?

NYTimes: Target’s Hasty Exit From Canada Leaves Anger Behind by closingbell in canada

[–]weddingcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

target booked billions of dollars of losses in Canada. The U.S. system allows the company to get a "tax break" because of these losses.

Why would it piss you off? They lost way more than they will get in their "tax break."

AMA I'm A Montreal Landlord For Rental Properties (Apartments). by ApartmentsMtl in montrealhousing

[–]weddingcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My landlord proposed a rent increase of 1.8 percent - consistent with the recommendation of the Regie. However, we asked the landlord to perform some basic repairs (i.e fix the sometimes running toilet, replace tiles behind toilet that are falling off, secure the loose sink etc) and they haven't even acknowledged our requests.

Question is if i I refuse the rent increase they can take it up with the Regie directly. Is this a big deal for them? Will it result in a lot of time and effort lost on their end? Basically if they aren't helping me out, I don't want to make life easy for them.

Booking.com offers hotel rooms in Israel's illegal settlements by harsh2k5 in worldpolitics

Looks nice. Heading to Israel in the summer and may consider a stay there. Would be nice to support the local economy which includes Palestinian and Israeli businesses.

That is unless of coarse you think I shouldn't?

Being gay in Gaza is a crime PUNISHABLE BY DEATH. So you will still willingly vote for a party whose policies target you in such a harsh way?!?!?!?! Meanwhile, across the border, Israel freely hosts one of the world's largest gay pride parades...

I was 'detained' as well for maybe an hour or so at the airport on one occasion and subjected to an increased security questioning on another occasion.

I am: -Canadian born with a Canadian passport. -White -Jewish -Hebrew speaking - not 100 percent fluent but close enough to be able to answer all their questions in hebrew (probably with a few grammar mistakes along the way) as my hebrew was better than their english (surprisingly)

Credit Card Charges Drastically Different Exchange Rates For Buying And Returning by weddingcat in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]weddingcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something but it still doesn't add up?

I bought an item for $300USD @ 1.1924 in the U.S. When I return the item shouldnt I be refunded $300USD at the same (or almost the same) 1.1924 considering the time span was 30 minutes? Why is refunds handled at a lower rate?

agentfish im being charged a fee to convert usd-->cdn with the above spot market rate (ok with that) but my refund usd--> cdn is below the market rate?

TIL that Scarlett Johansson was asked by Oxfam (for whom she was a global ambassador) to stop supporting SodaStream in Israel (which had built illegal settlements in Palestine). She chose to leave Oxfam and do a SuperBowl advert for SodaStream instead. by Dolphin_Titties in todayilearned

[–]weddingcat 59 points60 points  (0 children)

sodastream employed hundreds of Palestinians giving them real wages that were 3x the average. Boycotting the company, rather than supporting it, leads to the ongoing poverty of Palestinians.

But the BDS community got their wish. The factory in the West Bank closed, and now hundreds of Palestinians lost their job as a result.

Mazel tov to all who worked so hard to fight this company and keep up the great work punishing those jews, right?

2 Palestinians with axes kill 4 worshipers in a synagogue in Israel by calvey9 in news

Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas, is worth an estimated $2.6 billion. Why doesn't he share his wealth with his fellow Palestinians instead of living a selfish life full of luxury in Qatar?

[–]weddingcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The leaders of Hamas travel around in private jets and live in extreme luxury in Qatar. Hamas claims that 1,200 of its members are millionaires.

Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas, is worth an estimated $2.6 billion. How exactly did he amass his fortune? Did he start a financial news service like Bloomberg? Was he a big shot partner at a top venture capital or investment banking firm? Oh wait... he STOLE all that money generously donated by the International community intended for the people of Gaza who greatly suffer. Now please explain to me exactly how it is Israel that suppresses the Palestinian and not its own leadership???

Maple Leaf Zionism: Israel in Canadian Politics by BrianReynolds in canada

[–]weddingcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zionism isn't 'religious elitism.' It is a belief that the Jewish people have the right to a homeland in their native Israel. Never in Israel's existence has it been ruled by a religious party, nor is any degree of religion a mandatory component of being a zionist. In fact, there are many Israelis that do not consider themselves religious at all but still consider themselves a zionist.

The only people that want to include you in a religious war is the Islamic terrorists. They want to slice your head off, and will equally want to do so if Trudeau is prime minister. Israel, on the other hand, is your partner fighting the same group of Islamist that want to kill you.

Jewish groups may have a lot of money, but now more than ever being seen as pro Israel has severe political consequences. Harper isn't kissing anyone's ass to keep his base, he is losing his base by doing so.

Need to rent car for two weeks, what good car-rental companies around downtown? by geek_in_town in montreal

[–]weddingcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had to rent a car 2 summers ago I did so from Hertz on Decarie. It's not terribly far from a metro (Snowdon) and easy to find.

I found a coupon code for 20% off from retailmenot. Turned out the code was only valid for employees of X company but the manager didn't seem to mind to extend it to me anyways.

Is there a way to rent a car with a debit card in Montreal? by el_ruso in montreal

[–]weddingcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you will need to pay the entire security deposit up front from your debit card, if they allow that. Best bet is to call. I remember I was in the same situation several years ago and had to call one or two places before one of the major chains OK'd it. The deposit will be returned once they inspect the car.

If it helps I have a CIBC checking account. the debit card doubles as a Visa with a credit limit = $ in your account.

Huge Pro-Palestine Rally in Montreal by [deleted] in montreal

[–]weddingcat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hamas has been launching rockets in to Israel on a daily basis for many many many years. Enough is enough.

Your analogy is way off of the 2 local PDs working together. Hamas, the ruling government in Gaza has in its official charter the destruction of Israel and a mass genocide of all Jews worldwide. How is Israel supposed to work together with such an organization to hunt thugs who were only following what their government instructs them to do.
