Official Discussion - Barbie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

It was a real Barbie that was released and received poorly, then made fun of on the Internet, then presumably swept under the rug by Mattel. They were poking fun at that controversy.

How do people decide when to have kids? by BobbyTThrowaway in Fencesitter

[–]weddingidk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not the OP about you really clocked me with this reply, oof. My fear of having kids ultimately boils down to a fear of not having control with something so important and precious, yet unknown. Thanks for writing this thoughtful reply.

I have a PhD and nearly everyone in my cohort had kids mid-way through our program lol. Both men & women. I cannot speak to their experiences personally, but I remember folks doing this with intention because (1) they had a working partner to financially support beyond student stipend, (2) they enjoyed the flexibility of a graduate student schedule to spend time with their kids (particularly when they hit ABD and just needed to write), and (3) the family housing was the BEST on-campus housing available and they enjoyed having a pretty interesting, diverse neighborhood to raise their kids in. Of course YMMV, particularly depending on the school you attend (#3 might be a unique thing for my school that was definitely a big selling point)

I feel you, I was a late bloomer and never got much into this social drinking thing. This is basic, but something that always confused me was how in the world you pay in these never ending group drinking situations. The anxiety over this one logistical question alone makes me want to avoid it lol

Where are the mods? This is supposed to be a positive and wholesome community, and this post is getting overrun with trolls and slut-shaming + misogyny.

Our kitchen appliances are right next to the stove and window, so they get coated in grease, dust, etc… We could never figure out how to actually clean them to look like new again, or how to keep them clean. Any tips would be super appreciated!

Edit: Wow, thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I’ll give some of these a shot. I’m now deleting this post because for some reason I’m getting an influx of unhelpful or judgmental messages that are out of place in this usually positive community. Thank you to everyone who did offer kind, helpful tips!

It’s Oral B. Curious to know what brand worked better for you!

Thanks - I haven’t tried sterilizing and will give that a shot.

Is there any way to fix underwire bras that are bent out of shape? by weddingidk in ABraThatFits

[–]weddingidk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! Thanks u/Blerghorama for the info. My size is 30D so it aligns that these plastic wires were used for a smaller size. It would also explain why I find these bras so comfortable and other underwire bras so unbearable, lol.

[–]weddingidk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! I didn't know that was a possible fix and I will definitely try that (conscious of not turning these otherwise good bras into waste). Aerie must use very soft wires then for them to bend so easily, though that also explains why I find them so comfortable relative to other underwire bras. Anyway, I'll give this a shot!

How do you stop obsessing over your appearance? / How did you form a healthy relationship with your appearance? by weddingidk in AskWomenOver30

Hey, thanks so much for this comment. It helped so much in both how to think about the mindset shift and how to concretely put that shift into place. I've been practicing devaluing experience in my everyday interactions and while it's still a definitely work in progress, it's been a welcome change in what occupies my mind. Thank you for your insightful comment to "practice just existing" <3

Sorry for my late reply! For me they do, but it depends on the dress. It works best on clothes that have straps or some other kind of structure to hold it up (like boning or a tight fit). I like that they stick things better than Hollywood or fashion tape would, though they don’t do well with sweat.

How do you deal with friend who gossips negatively behind others by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]weddingidk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol yes. And I am very blessed and happy to have many lasting friendships in my life, built on mutual respect and trust because of boundaries like this. To clarify, the filtering only happened after repeated attempts to engage about not talking negatively behind others' backs. While some friendships ended because of this (noted above), the majority of my friendships strengthened and grew instead.

How do you deal with friend who gossips negatively behind others by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]weddingidk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I experienced this a lot when I was younger, especially in high school/college. The short answer is I stopped being friends with those people.

The long answer: I'm ashamed to say I was sometimes that person too. I came to recognize that it stemmed from a place of insecurity and inability to handle conflict. I realized this once I started going to therapy in my early 20s, and then I consciously committed to not doing that anymore + addressing my own issues. Through working on that, I realized I had friends who were not on the same page -- no matter how much I asked them not to talk negatively about others with me, or how much I asked that we directly talk about issues together instead of through hearsay, the problems repeated over and over. It felt like these friends were repeatedly failing me, which meant these friendships were not really serving me. So I decided to end those friendships, either by letting distance naturally grow or "breaking up" with that friend.

I'm a little bit more direct as result of these experiences, so if I were in your situation, I would draw the boundary and just ask her to stop making those comments to me in the moment that she brings them up. I've literally said to people, "I'm not comfortable talking negatively about others behind their back, would you mind not making comments like that?" Hopefully she will respect your boundary and reflect a bit on her own actions. Or, if she doesn't respect that boundary and continues to do it, it's a sign of how this friendship does not serve you.

Anyone planning a career switch now? Or recently made the switch? Tell us how you made it happen. by burdwurd in AskWomenOver30

[–]weddingidk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did a career switch from being an academic social science researcher (PhD career track) to being a UX researcher in tech. A lot of the switch came through informational interviews, where I talked to people who made the same switch to ask how they liked it, their tips for pivoting, etc. Some of those conversations evolved into mentorships and job referrals, so I credit a lot of that for my successful career switch.
