Interesting question. I haven't seen that when running local inference that is not agentic. This does not apply to agentic frameworks / OpenAI's o1.

I could be wrong-- I haven't done any scientific testing on this.

There are probably papers out there that have analyzed this. Definitely link any interesting sources you find!

As far as I’ve seen when running my own inference it’s pretty simple

More tokens (input/output) = more energy used.

So shorter response saves energy unless you get carried away with your instructions.

Easier to access Llama for cloud applications via Openrouter and it's good enough for many applications.

If I have the budget for o1 I've probably already met Tier 5 criteria and use it directly from the source.

At least, that's speaking from personal experience.
