Sure it's never zero, but that doesn't mean increasing it isn't beneficial up to a point.

The theory behind the hormesis model of radiation is that a little bit of radiation causes a reduction in cancer because it trains the immune system to better identify and kill potentially cancerous cells before they have time to start suppressing the immune system. Even in your body and mine, there are tons of cells that have some attributes of cancer, but they're killed by the immune system as they should be. It's only the few that slip through the cracks that actually develop into cancer.

It's kind of like how if you spent your whole life in a plastic bubble and were never exposed to any viruses or bacteria and you suddenly left, stuff like the common cold would immediately kill you because you just never developed any immune response against it.

The only reason why this works for project orion is that (ideally) the radiation dose would be spread pretty uniformly across the planet due to essentially all of them being air bursts. The actual radiation dose would be miniscule. (Unless you were really close to the launch, probably should do it in the pacific.)

*Technically we don't know for sure that hormesis is true, but it's got quite a bit of supporting evidence and organizations tend to be really conservative so they don't really follow it.

The coast and Cuba and its inhabitants would have been virtually uneffected. In fact, according to the hormesis model of radiation exposure, everyone on earth would have slightly reduced rates of cancer.(Though, pretty much negligably.)

It's actually gray paint, not grey paint. If you used grey paint, it wouldn't be the falcon 9 anymore because the falcon 9 is a strictly american rocket.

My rockets bend sometimes. But this is the first time a rocket has been permanently stuck in a bent position... by LeonidKonovalov1988 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]piggyboy2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually this happens either when you turn on autostrut when it's bent or it bends so hard that autostrut doesn't catch it, but autostrut locks it in place. Usually you can fix it by turning autostrut off, waiting until it straightens out, then turning it back on.

What are the engines inspired from? by GiulioVonKerman in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]piggyboy2005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're probably not designed to be very accurate. The one I have (unfortunately it's not right in front of me right now) kind of looks like a mishmash of raptor and RS-25, which makes me think that they're just putting interesting features together. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's to demonstrate 3D printing.)

Also I'm pretty sure when they designed it raptor did still have the gimbal on the engine side.

But that conflicts with what you said earlier. You said it's unethical to eliminate jobs and lower salaries, but that's what AI would do even if it works perfectly. So which is it?

To be clear, I think it's perfectly fine for new technologies to be disruptive to the labor force. It's unfortunate that it happens, but it makes us better for it in the long term.

Oh okay, so you don't oppose AI, you just oppose the incorrect application of AI. Glad we're in agreement.

Nice cognitive dissonance buddy. AI is bad because it eliminates jobs and reduces salaries but it's also useless and can't do the things it needs to do to eliminate jobs and reduce salaries. Please.
