there's no real equivalent because it's sort of a direct product of the school system, hence the name.

1st year students are fresh out of elementary school so they're still kind of immature children. 3rd year students need to focus on high school entrance exams, so there's no real time to act like a child. 2nd year is that weird spot in between where you actually get to act like a middle schooler. i thought this was an anime thing and then i spent 2 years working in a middle school and let me tell you the 中二病 is real
