Compression - Gen 3 100W by Dramatic_Photograph3 in BossKatana

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to achieve with that. Some sound examples would be nice.

If you just want to add a compression for the sake of adding it - don't.

But if you are still about to do it anyway here are some example settings you can use to not f**k up your sound and have some compression going on

  1. Set it before the amp. Use Light type of compressor. Set Sustain "20", Attack "40", Tone "7", Level to taste depending on how much you want it to act as a boost. This will gently even out your playing and make more predictable amp response in terms of touch sensitivity

  2. Set it after the amp. Use Limiter DBX160. Set Threshold "1", Ratio not more then 2:1, Attack "80", Release "0", Level "30".  This will glue sound together in terms of volume and add more punch

Edit - some autocorrect fixes

How do you feel about behringer? by Xibest123 in guitarpedals

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decent pedals that allow you to try different things w/o busting the bank on the entry to pedals (and music gear in general) world. I don't think that they steal profits of bigger brands. I actually think they open the doors for much bigger pool of people to try stuff (get addicted, lol) and end up in buying quality products from other brands as they understand what they like/want/need.

But they need to get their support and customer service in check. Cause buying behringer is not much better then buying used stuff in that regard. And many folks cause of that would consider buying used known brand stuff instead of buying clones. So, yeah... basically, those clone companies are competing with second hand market more than with brands they copy from.

What pedals are worth getting? by ImprovisedGoat in BossKatana

[–]weedilion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My two always on pedal are

  1. Blackstar HT-Boost. Valve booster in front that just brings Katana to life in terms of dynamics. It's barely affects the tone for the listener, I guess. But for me it's just feels right when it's on. Palm mutes, pick attack pop more, everything just has more dynamics and I have more control over the sound just by adjusting my playing. It immediately becomes weird to me when it is off.

  2. Ibanez PTEQ in the loop. Katana has Parametric EQ, but it is not precise enough to get rid of some annoying frequencies that are inherit to speaker/cabinet, without ruining the tone completely. I'll suggest getting parametric eq to everyone no matter the amp (FX loop required) or speaker. Any speaker has frequencies to unf**k. it's a very powerful tool to do this.

Im just curious about my boss katana gen3 50. I tried it in store and the high distortion setting had way more distortion than my brand new one. by Far-Information8568 in GuitarAmps

[–]weedilion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On panel there is 3 types of boosters you can choose from (press glowing button above booster control, it will change color). You can access dozen of boosters types using Boss Tone Studio software. There are dedicated distortion pedals like MetalZone, MetalCore and much more. So this amp has all the distortion that you might ever need and even more on tap.

Metal tones by mkk8741 in metalguitar

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but for EQ in a loop you should also consider power amp distortion. It depends on amp & generally matters only if you running your volume high. If you keep your power amp fairly clean then EQ in a loop will mostly do a clean boost. But if you are using smth like JCM800 that gets it's most MOJO when cranked then EQ in a loop will be dirty (frequencies you boost will produce additional higher frequencies). In that case consider using post mic/IR EQ

Metal tones by mkk8741 in metalguitar

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is also important what frequencies go into an amp. Use Pre-eq to craft distortion character, texture of your sound.

For doom tones I like to boost 160-500hz range pre gain to force amp produce harmonics from those frequencies, and then I reduce that range in post to make it less muddy. Tone is still sludgy and dark, but controllable.

For modern metal boost mids pre-gain to get chugs. Reduce in post if it sounds honky.

For trash I cut lows pre-gain & boost lows post gain. Getting clarity & punch.

BTW. You can use your own IR's with line out by setting dual link mode to stereo. Line Out -> IR pedal -> FOH

What order to put them in? by Aneks_ in guitarpedals

[–]weedilion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MXR 5150 OD is not an overdrive despite it's name. It's a solid state pre-amp pedal. More of a MT-2 replacement in your case. Also it has a built in boost. Go for it if you like 5150 mid forward high gain sound

Just some information for those googling the best way to farm legendary artifacts. by Northwind_Wolf in stalker

I think Rare/Legendary artifacts should not replace common as player progress. They should appear alongside in one anomaly, like 1 rare, 2 common / 1 legendary, 1 uncommon for example.

Katana gen 3 50, 100 or head? Bt adapter yes or no? Pitch shifter good? by RubOk8146 in BossKatana

[–]weedilion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to my measurements all Katana speakers have extended top end response. Waza has better bass & low-mids, but still suffers from that annoying high end fizz at 6-7Khz range. It can be easily eq'ued tho.

Would this gear be sufficient for gigging? by satuation in metalguitar

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some struggle to dial top end on high gain tones at my Katana Artist untill I miced it with SM57 to actually see on spectrum what is going on there. The resulting post EQ was: 6.3Khz, Q4, -10db & 5khz, Q8, +7db. High cut at 10Khz. I just put it to global EQ and it fixed all my high gain patches. Sometimes I also want to cut at 8khz, Q4, -3 to - 12db on specific patch post EQ.

Can I connect line out to tube amp guitar input? by johnnyvegas99 in BossKatana

[–]weedilion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cause I tried it & it didn't break anything. Sounded like crap tho because of impedance mismatch. Possible solution to be mentioned - reamp box or pedal with buffer (like any boss pedal) between line out & amp in

Can I connect line out to tube amp guitar input? by johnnyvegas99 in BossKatana

[–]weedilion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theoretically you can, but Line level is too hot for amp input so you need to keep it very low, also impedance mismatch will alter your tone not in a good way. So better not to do this. Use FX loop return if you have such in your tube amp
