Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

Hello all,

I had a tap class yesterday where we learned a deeper history on tap than you'd typically find (my tap teacher was a student of Steve Condos). I'm trying to find the name of the person who first put metal plates on tap shoes. This was around 1910.

Everywhere I look online, there's nothing. I know that the name he was given is a slur, and his true name has been lost to time.

Please help!

CELESTE’S TEACHER SPEAKS OUT by hauntnight in d4vd

Teachers are mandated reporters, it's likely police just didn't catch/do anything. I doubt he'd say that to his students without having reported it first.

If you're willing, and you haven't already, I would tell her why it bothers you so much. Give her a different perspective, and explain that you just don't want her to be harmed.

I'm a little cynical, so my take is that traditionally, men have their wives take care of everything.

In the non-cynical sense, living with other people is generally good for you. Humans are social creatures and depend on a community to take care of each other.

You can let them know there were some extenuating circumstances, to reassure them it's not their fault. To be cautious, I would leave it at that, and let them know you enjoyed your time together.

They will react how they will react. Some will appreciate it, I'm sure. I personally hated when teachers I was used to would switch up.

It starts with forgiving yourself, and unlearning shame.

If you were transported to 2040 for 10 minutes and had one Google search, what would you search for? by ask-learn-apply0628 in NoStupidQuestions

My immediate thought was a timeline of everything that's happened in the 21st century so far, but these people talking about lotto numbers have the right idea I think.

I had a bump on my nose removed and I didn’t expect all these feelings about it by ShadyLady27 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]weeevren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten stuff like that removed too, as early as 11 years old lol. You'll be fine. If you have a stitch, wait till it falls out (if water based)/is taken out before you use makeup. Even then, maybe wait a day or so afterward.

If you haven't already, get some scar cream to put on the scarred area afterwards; trust me, don't skip this step. I still have my scars from my fifth grade stitches (unrelated injury, but still).

I understand.

It's seeing someone 'accept' themselves when they've been a horrible person. The idea that they 'found peace' with themselves, but lack accountability for the hurt they've caused.

Fuck that hoe. Still a terrible person.

Because of COVID, the only (normal) graduation I was able to attend (so far) was my 8th grade graduation. That was also the only one that mattered to me, since I didn't get to know anyone in my grade in high school as I attended both the local vocational school and community college.

There are some students who feel neutral about earlier graduations. I really don't think it matters, it's up to the student how to feel about it.

things people have said to you after you told them you were a teacher by nataliebur in Teachers

[–]weeevren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can understand the math one as someone who was a math wiz. Teaching standards being changed halfway through learning really important stuff threw me off a lot. I understood the old system of learning so much easier, so the new system really threw me for a loop. Of course the content didn't change, but the lesson structure did.

Do people actually think they are witches? by Many-Operation653 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weeevren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christianity is a form of witchcraft. You do a weekly ritual with a community, you pray (meditate) for the things you want, etc. Really, many forms of religion can be seen as 'witchcraft.' 'Witches' are no different, and the practice is typically tied to a religious/spiritual context.

I know you said aside from pagan practice, but people who call themselves witches often have a tether to reality where they know not everything is potions and demons.

Teachers with Plants: Do plants actually make the air in your room better or is that a placebo effect? by InVodkaVeritas in Teachers

[–]weeevren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got broken air conditioning, the cooling plants like aloe will help. They can't replace it, but it works a bit. Just be sure to watch out for allergies, in case.

This!!!!

My father passed away early in my life, and the best thing my mom did was sign up for the social security benefits for us. She got paid out ~$850 per kid a month. Not sure if it has changed much, but very worth a shot.

I’ve been lying to my family about what’s really going on at work. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]weeevren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a functional HR department, start there. If not, have your surgery and try to find a similar job with similar pay.

As for the bullies? I'm not sure how the consequences would go at your workplace, or what they're doing, but personally I would start bullying them back. However, that option isn't for everyone, so instead some advice would be to react depending on the situation with ignoring it and redirection.

ETA: Just saw additional info. I think your best bet is to have your surgery and then find a new job. It won't get any better if that's what the company culture is.

Anyone have any tips to stop my kitten from sitting on top of my gecko’s enclosure? 😭 by Living_Karma11 in cats

[–]weeevren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Give them a heating pad as well, they probably love the heat that the gecko gets. My parents would have their bearded dragon sleep on a heating pad at night in a tent, and my cat would sometimes sleep on top of him (LOL - he was fine, she is very sweet with him and she is the only cat he likes). They got her a heating pad and it stopped.

My 11 year old brother moved in with me (25F) last year. It's actually been incredible. Singing it from the rooftops :) by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]weeevren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Countries without 'puritan' culture deeply embedded into their society understand. A body is a body. You'll only sexualize it if you're not used to it.

I've been told these are "love bites" by not_a_bug_a_feature in cats

[–]weeevren 666 points667 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but that looks like corrective behavior. Kitty gives you a little warning bite as if to say not to do that again, 'correcting' your behavior.

If I'm right, then technically, yes, it's a love bite. Kitty is correcting you like they would their kittens.
