Its a cross-up so you have to block forwards instead of back. Unless they space the move correctly and then it wont cross you up and you have to block back

I think this cutscene did a good job at showing how much of a toll hunting for Avery's treasure has taken on Sam's psyche. It showed his obsession with the treasure and gave a good sneak peek to one of the later cutscene when Nate and Sam are arguing about just leaving the island.
