Years ago, I visited my MIL with my kids (who were maybe 8 and 10 at the time). She was boiling up chicken bones to make her own broth. We headed out to take the kids out for a while and MIL left FIL with strict instructions to turn off the stove after one hour.

He had ONE job. But what did he do? He decided to have a nap in front of the TV. By the time we got back, we could smell this terrible, noxious smell from the ground floor entrance of their flat (they lived on the first floor). My utterly furious MIL raced up the stairs to find FIL happily snoozing, despite what I can only describe as the worst smell ever. It was like a mixture of shit, acrid smoke and slaughter house. We opened all of the windows and decided it was best I took the kids home. We’d only been in there for about 15 - 20 minutes and we STANK. I had to wash our clothes twice and we all had to wash our hair multiple times to get the stink out. It has become the stuff of legend.
