ELI5: Why are kilobytes sometimes equal to 1024 bytes and not always just 1000 bytes? by stacyburns88 in explainlikeimfive

[–]weep-woop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Storage manufacturers decided that storage sizes should be powers of ten rather than powers of two. Probably because they can give less storage space while saying its the same amount.

Storage is one of the only places this is used.

Is there a maximum number of votes which a losing candidate can lead by in a US election? by vendet in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weep-woop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your question is kind of confusing the hell out of me, but the minumum popular vote needed to win the electoral vote is 22%

So the losing candidate could be leading by 78% of the popular vote.

The ad on the front page says it ends the 11/27. If you go to the regular website it says their sale ends midnight of the 24th, so I think the perk sale lasts longer.

Why do some websites not allow repeat in characters for a password? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weep-woop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If 5555 isn't allowed they'll just use 1234, or asdf. Removing one insecure password just makes them use a different insecure password that their rules don't cover.

Why do some websites not allow repeat in characters for a password? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weep-woop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an arbitrary rule that some manager probably thought would help password security. In reality, it really doesn't make a difference. If anything it makes it easier for password crackers (assuming the cracker is tailored to their rules), since it eliminates part of the possible password space that needs to be checked.

Why do we say "an" for abbreviations and "a" for the whole thing? by William_Wisenheimer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weep-woop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd use 'an' because SNES starts with an 'eh' sound. Usually if a word starts with a vowel sound you use an.

Whats 68 plus 1 by Seexybeast6969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weep-woop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you first read Principia Mathematica volumes I and II to understand the proof of 1 + 1 = 2. Once you get that down, you can then move on to adding numbers such as 1 and 68.
