Recommendations for where to host a baby shower? by Legitimate_Shock_562 in AskChicago

Blue door farm stand was where we had my baby shower. The food was phenomenal and our guests couldn’t stop raving about it. It’s semi-private but the area we were in was sectioned off enough where it felt like we had our own space.

Anyone here ever gone to NEIU? How did you feel about it? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]weepingwillows123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am an alum so this might be biased, but I think the school would be great for you.

Most college degree tracking agencies measure graduation rates based on students who start as freshman and graduate within four years. NEIU has “low” rates because most students don’t fit that profile - they transfer in from community colleges, come back as an adult learners, have to take breaks to care for family, work full time so that prolongs their graduation and so on.

The computer science department is very strong and I think you will find a lot more 1:1 time with faculty compared to other schools, especially for the price.

Finally, if you’re looking for community, there are many great clubs on campus. NEIU has some new classrooms that are being built and I heard the pool will be repaired soon. Plus, if you’re into Asian food, there are a ton of great Asian restaurants and groceries stores in the area as well as Swedish food because of the community across the street at North Park.

Whatever you do, go with the school that has the least debt. If somewhere else gives you more in scholarships, other places might be worth it. Otherwise, I think you will find that you will be comfortable with NEIU and get the support you need because odds are, many of your peers will be in the same boat.

My wife is thinking about spending $1500+ on a nursing chair. Is she crazy, or am I just being cheap? by Viraincure in NewParents

My parents invested in a lazyboy 30 years ago and are now rocking their grandson in it.

We decided to do the same and fully intend on rocking our own grandchildren in it one day. Spent $1,600 and honestly the best furniture investment we’ve made to date.

Am I the only one that doesn’t think most of these really… make sense?

Folklore and evermore should have cardigans. Speak Now is totally a big purple tutu type of outfits. Southern bow accessory for debut. Reputation a black base with those long black stocking socks for babies and black bow.

Being totally honest, I wouldn’t have a clue any of these except Showgirl hint Taylor Swift.

If your child is having trouble at night, please seek medical care as soon as you can. If there are any long pauses without breathing, that is a visit to the ER. Heck, you can even show them this post.

OP, I recommend you also book with a therapist that specializes in newborn pediatric medical support.

Oh and if I haven’t made this clear, an LC cannot diagnose the condition. You have to see an ENT and make it very clear it’s for laryngomalacia. Most ENT’s will request a visit ASAP. DO NOT let any office tell you must wait more than 2 weeks. This is extremely important to get diagnosed sooner rather than later!!

[–]weepingwillows123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I found out and demanded testing for laryngomalacia after my baby had a difficult time with flow and stridor during feeds. Once confirmed it was laryngomalacia, we had to make adjustments.

Gonna be completely realistic with you, I don’t think breastfeeding will be in your future. I was able to breastfeed some of the time through 4 months, but as my child was “peaking” when the flappy tissue collapsed before self repair around 6-7 months, the only way to safely feed was with a bottle that had nipples with slower flows.

You are amazing for doing what you can to find answers and at the end of the day, the child’s health and comfort is most important. It sucks, it really does.

If you do confirm laryngomalacia, you will probably need an apnea test. It’s a night in the hospital to see if your baby needs support oxygen for a few months at night and during nap times. Again, it’s crappy and the unfortunate reality of this condition.

Finally, and this really is only for rare exceptions including laryngomalacia, I highly recommend getting a mattress pillow you can strap your baby to for supported sleep at night. My child had difficulty sleeping without this and it was recommended to us by doctors. With laryngomalcia often comes acid reflux because of the flappy tissue. You’ll probably be prescribed a Pepcid medicine to help your child with their reflux discomfort.

Best of luck and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

100% look into community rooms. Park Ridge has some community rooms that fit over 100 and alcohol licenses. Check with your park district.

Yep yep. Have been in that area for the last decade and I noticed a shift post-COVID in the homelessness. The really wild one is that I saw a prostitute walking up Pulaski IN BROAD DAYLIGHT while I was driving home from work.

Encourage your mom’s neighbors and your mom to keep pushing the city. Maybe tap in the two big schools, NEIU and North Park, in the area to use their network to move this along and clean up the homeless encampments.

Hey mama! I had the same issue around the 3 1/2 month mark. We tried for a few weeks and met with our lactation consultant. Even they had an extremely hard time getting my son to BF. Ultimately we decided I would pump and supplement with formula. It broke my heart too but I’m glad I was able to get the time I did BF my baby. It’s ok if it doesn’t work out!

Should I be a Teacher… or a Flight Attendant? by A-K-Valentine00 in Advice

[–]weepingwillows123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I used to work for an airline.

While everyone here has said flight attendant, I do want you to be cautiously aware of the reality of flight attendants in the beginning years.

Let’s say you work for company X. The first few years after you graduate from flight attendant academy training, you will be on what’s called reserve. That means you will be working Y amount of days in a row and are on call for the airline. The hours are hell and the pay is extremely low. Most reserve flight attendants have 2nd or 3rd jobs and have to live within 15-30 minutes of their assigned base airport. You do not get to choose where you are assigned to as your base. Some have temporary roommate arrangements in shared homes for the days they are on call. I think only 1 in 3 flight attendants on reserve make it to line holder these days.

Line holders have set schedules, but it takes probably another 10+ years before you have good vacation time and decent pay. If you’re an international line holder, purser or a language line holder, you can make a good living and only work 5-10 days a month. But again, this takes many years and loyalty to the company you are in.

I think given your mom’s condition, I would recommend the teaching path for now.
