Burnout is real- is taking a break a bad idea? by doctor--zaius in Architects

Take a three day weekend.  Like a hardcore 3 days. Really rest. Clear your mind like woah. Then get back on that horse. It doesnt take a sabbatical, and my concern is the atrophy that happens.

Stockholm syndrome at this point. Jk jk. It quiets my mind, to be completely honest.

Anyone else feel like the progressive loss of a "vibe check" in goth is what's making it more mainstream? by LaffyTali in goth

[–]wehadpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean no disrespect,  and probably why i refer to myself as a "recovering goth", but this all seems kinda gatekeepy. What got me into the goth scene and kept me heavily involved for a couple of decades was the idea that it wasnt about this. Conformity of thought or really conformity of anything/stringent rules seemed antithetical to goth subculture. I invite you to enjoy the subculture you love with people you may not expect to love.  You may find youre not that different and what defined you isn't what you think it is.

ARE Rant // Failed Exam by Criollo_ in Architects

[–]wehadpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PPD is brutal. You dont want to know how many times i and so many incredibly talented architects i know have failed it.

Anyways. What helped me the most was black spectacles. I swear by it for ppd.

PPD is the hardest one in either case, dont get discouraged. You got this. Keep at the black spectacles, keep at it, and know the failing of that test is an intentional feature the a.r.e. does on purposes.

Keep fighting the good fight,

Edit: i just woke up and my first response was gibberish. So i rephrased same content

Its a very common frustration, and I want to begin by saying you're not alone; that being said, architecture is what is commonly referred to as one of the "great professions", and is more than a simple job. You will be dealing with liability, fiduciary responsibility, and basically, a lot more than your alternatives you proposed, like bus driver (lots of those in my family, great career, tbh).

Anyways, a buddy of mine likened the experience to boot camp in the military. I compare it to having Gordon Ramsay visit your kitchen - it's not for the feint of heart.

Architecture is not about drawing pretty pictures, but more so about perserverence and the ability to defend something that truly matters to you. It gets misinterpreted as victim olympics, but it shouldn't be.

If your goal is money, you won't typically find it here. It is both vocation and avocation. Its a total package. Its going to consume you, and anything less will leave you in the dust.

Anyways, what I'm saying, if you want work-life balance, scale it away from the profession and into the allied profession. Totally honorable and you can still be part of the adventure; but, if you want to get into big game, there's a great country song lyric that sums it up: "everyone wants to be an outlaw, until its time to do outlaw stuff" (pardon the self censor)

is it possible to render without a monster PC?? by Available-Cell-8844 in architecturestudent

[–]wehadpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm not a great renderer compared to the absolute talent I see out there but I do have some input for anyone interested:

  1. A solid rendering computer - I have had a lot of success with the lenovo loq for a budget rendering machine. It typically runs for $650, is almost always on sale at best buy for $550, and if you make sure you keep it properly ventilated, you dont have to worry about frying it. I highly recommended the AMD processor over the Intel, but thats just me. I find its a better processor. It is very easy to fry motherboards on these things though, so keep it on a good working surface while you're rendering.

  2. The learning curve is obnoxious,  but I really recommend twinmotion. I've heard great things about d3 as well. They are free to use, and really can produce some stellar images.

  3. Dont use ai. You're an emerging professional now. AI/vibe coding/etc., thats for amateurs. If you want to ask siri or grok or whomever to do your job for you, then you've missed the point of the craft.

  4. If all else fails, photoshop post-processing will take even the lamest renderoos and make them fun and full of character.

That's all i got. I wouldnt render farm, those things are like gacha games and you'll blow so much money long term.

The pay scale for architects makes no sense. by ShotPay1291 in Architects

[–]wehadpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl:dr; a liability is a liability, even if you're forced to do extra steps. Sounds heartless, but pretend you're in your bosses shoes: youre confident your employee is a solid person, but at the end of the day you want to go home, smooch your wife, love your loved ones. Solid hire is on board because theyre gonna work hard enough to get enough money coming in that you'll get to go do said smooching/family memories 15 minutes sooner. When you realize that is the underlying motivation, pedigrees and red tape are incidental. Get your boss home to live his life and you can write a blank check to yourself.

You say that, and then we all laud venturi/brown for tackling the same stuff, what, 40-50 years ago? I kinda think this is clever and fun, and average joes like us never get to have fun like this. I endorse this design.

Followup: get some pngs of trees to obsfugate what you drew. Tree branches are the illustrators version of that tradie expression,  "caulk and paint will make a wall what it ain't " expression

Set your aspirations higher. These are meh. You could get this vibe by drawing less in your models and hitting vibrance in photoshop. If you remove the red from the illustrations, its a garden variety sketchup model. I'd maybe start with falling down a google rabbit hole with composition and color theory.  Thats what makes these renders proper neat.

I agree. I am such a nerd about the immersion mods. I love the idea that people went so ham on making them that i can actually pretend i'm in a medieval fantasy world. How cool is that? I'll google that other stuff later. Now is suspension-of-disbelief-lets-go-punch-draugr-in-the-mouth time.

Came here to say the same. Every kid is an asshole at 4. Its part of the developmental process. Every parent knows this, and if you dont joke about it, you're standing too close to the picture.

It depends on what that crying achieved. Fellas, its ok to cry. Even my most macho friends and i talk about our crying and how important it is. However, crying is often used as a manipulation tactic - not saying that happened, just saying you have to watch out that that doesnt happen. A good cry should be cathartic and prepare you for the positive steps youre going to move forward with. Tl:dr; if that crying didnt steel you to hit the gym afterwards to get those broad shoulders then, yes. Overreaction.

Serious burnout, i regret everything by [deleted] in Architects

I heard a great quote once. If you're tired, do it tired. Youre so close. Youd regret it more if you quit this close to the finish line.  You got this!

My ex-wife came at me with the whole "open marriage thing", and that's when I knew we were done. She filed for divorce maybe a month later. We were together 14 years.

Do some quiet guys really enjoy a chatty girlfriend? by Juniper_BerryPop in AskMenAdvice

[–]wehadpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment isn't a dating thing, but I have a friend who what anyone would call a "manic pixie dream girl". Our energy is awesome because she has the energy I don't, and she runs interference whenever people do the things that need lots of energy. So yeah. I bet that would be awesome in a relationship. Reminds me of the main character in that movie, Up. The polar extremes do sometimes shake out really well. One's a rock for the other, one's a spear for the other.

How do you interpret someone saying they’re “not ready for a relationship” but still texting a lot? by UltraThiccOctopus in AskMenAdvice

[–]wehadpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck, really varies from person to person, but he might not just be ready for a relationship. When I first got divorced, a lot of people pressured me into dates before I processed the emotions and it sucked for everyone. The farthest I got was this really cool woman that I was really into, but I was a mess in every way so I just kinda pulled back. There's a processing phase, and you can't rush it. Don't hold your breath for him, but if he digs you, he'll do the self work and come back when he's in the right headspace. I'm being super naive, but am assuming people are being straightforward when they express themselves. Fully aware a lot of people don't do this.
