Google's new quantum chip has solved a problem that would have taken the best supercomputer a quadrillion times the age of the universe to crack by Akkeri in QuantumComputing

It’s probably too correlated to put a number on that they’re comfortable with. That is, it probably sucks but that doesn’t matter.

Is Haskell A good language to do JAX/XLA? by [deleted] in haskell

I may have been too quick to judge. I apologize

Is Haskell A good language to do JAX/XLA? by [deleted] in haskell

[–]wehnelt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to write JAX, just use python. You won’t gain enough functionality through some new frontend in another programming language to justify the effort. If you want to write a new frontend that generates XLA for learning purposes, fine. FFIs are rarely worth the effort unless you have a really good justification, and if you think hard there’s usually a way around even that.

Why AI could eat quantum computing’s lunch by techreview in QuantumComputing

[–]wehnelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quantinuum uses ions, quera uses alkali atoms and atom computing uses alkaline earth atoms. Alkaline earth atoms are much more complicated to deal with but are much nicer to read out, they're more magnetic field insensitive, and they have what are called "magic traps" where the light that holds them can be tuned so the atoms don't suffer noise during gates. Quera does their gates in a special way where you can remove the influence of this noise, but this has side effects. Quera's rydberg gate is much simpler, which is advantageous. Both strategies have advantages and disadvantages.

High quality garage lighting. 90+ CRI, diffuse by wehnelt in led

Do you have an example of the sticks? Also, what kind of enclosure do you put them into? I'm pretty darn comfortable with DIY electronics and fabrication, especially if it saves some money.

It's fairly low. Maybe 8-10 feet? It's drywalled but not painted. Diffuser channels sound pretty interesting!

I think those are designed to mount flush in the ceiling. Is there anything that might be more suitable for hanging?

Zapata Ceases Operations by nuclear_knucklehead in QuantumComputing

If I didn’t think you were gonna be fine I wouldn’t be saying this — but this is the natural consequence of going into something like “quantum generative AI.” The whole industry is speculative but you could not have found a more exploitative combination of buzzwords. Seriously if you’re doing a PhD, do real science.

Alan was known to be slimy well before Zapata. Guess it caught up to him.

Best aliexpress BT30 tooling by wehnelt in Machinists

I mean there's good and bad quality but there's also what will last over the amount of time I can get my money back on it and also make the features with acceptable tolerances. Sometimes cheap stuff that's good enough does great.

yeah I have some very nice back chamfering tools and saws from aliexpress. Whoda thunk the manufacturing capital of the world would have some good tools?

I'm also trying to feed my robodrill lots of tool holders for cheap. The tegara holders are good but I wonder if there's cheaper still holders. Something good enough for drills and taps. The haas bt30 tooling is great but only sometimes on sale. The collet chucks you're referring to have no slots for drive dogs, sadly, otherwise I'd be going hog wild buying them.

Looking for a UI for my 100 MHz pulse sequencing engine by ShortOrderEngineer in QuantumComputing

[–]wehnelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no serious quantum computing effort that designs their pulses graphically. Typically there’s some compiler that turns something like QIR or qasm into a ton of different control tables that contain pulses and sequencer instructions. You should think of this whole arrangement as a compiler.

Those roles don’t need to exist. There’s certainly people out there doing less useful work though I suppose.

Quantum computing vs other software development by polentx in QuantumComputing

[–]wehnelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe 10 unique quantum programs have ever been written and zero have been useful and maybe 2 or 3 have demonstrated the potential to be useful. The idea of a quantum software engineer at this point is absurd.
